Chai and Change: Sipping on Digital Transformation with CPG Leaders
After taking our Chaiship to numerous cities across India and beyond, we thought, why not host a Chai pe Charcha with the business legends of Ahmedabad, proudly known as the Manchester of India?
Amidst the buzz surrounding AI, we found ourselves torn between joining the noise or cutting through it to spotlight the essence of Real Intelligence. After much thought, we settled on the theme for our roundtable: "Where Intelligence is Not Artificial." To our delight, this theme guided our discussions perfectly, leading to valuable insights that helped us navigate the complexities of RTM optimisation. The highlight turnaround hour for the discussion happened at the digital o’clock. The discussion took a turn towards digitisation, sparking a key moment for our theme. Blending AI with human expertise—Thinking Beyond the Algorithm and Infusing Tech with a Human Touch—emerged as the way to truly transform the digital landscape. As these ideas echoed around the table, we knew we were on the right path.
Embracing Digital Transformation: Challenges and Solutions
The conversation started with discussing the challenges of technology transformation, particularly the need for it in some organisations. A common dilemma that came to light was businesses either resisting digitisation altogether or aiming for the moon without a clear strategy. The critical point was that true transformation happens when business ownership drives the adoption of digital solutions, making them more accessible and relevant.
The panel swiftly agreed that setting the right expectations and delivering on them is crucial for successful digital transformation.
A few eminent members underscored the importance of balancing technology with business execution. They noted that while technology can streamline processes, the human connection—engaging with employees at all levels and addressing their concerns—ensures successful implementation. The fear that technology will replace jobs is still prevalent, but the key is to communicate that AI and automation are tools to reduce errors and lead times, not threats to employment.
The Human Element in Digitisation
Another phase of the roundtable led to an exciting topic of information vs valuable information. It transpired towards push notifications and nudges, which have become a very widespread phenomenon. It was argued that these should go beyond simply providing information—they should offer actionable insights that can drive tangible business outcomes. This aligns with the broader theme of the discussion: technology should enhance, not replace, the human intelligence that drives decision-making.
The conversation also touched on the difference between digitisation and digital transformation. This sparked the thought that while Artificial Intelligence may be driving digitisation, achieving true digital transformation will require a good dose of an organisation wide Real Intelligence exercise.
Some other members emphasised that digitisation is merely the first step—true transformation requires a shift in mindset and operations, integrating technology into every aspect of the business.

Collaborate and Rise
The last leg of the discussion brimmed with insights on how young professionals and experienced leaders can effectively complement each other in the digital age. While younger employees bring adaptability and fresh perspectives, seasoned professionals offer a wealth of deep market knowledge. The key is to harness both strengths, leveraging data accuracy for faster decision-making and embracing a "fail fast, adapt fast" approach.
Another point raised was the importance of analysing productivity to minimise unnecessary loop of communications, which can help streamline decision-making processes. Additionally, identifying weaker points in the market and adjusting strategies accordingly was emphasised as crucial for staying competitive.
Wrapping-Up
The roundtable highlighted the importance of balancing technological advancements with human insight and connection. As businesses continue to navigate the complexities of digital transformation, the discussions emphasised that success lies in thoughtful integration—where technology supports and enhances human decision-making rather than replacing it.
After the culmination of the roundtable, we moved on to networking over dinner and mocktails. The event was a success, where genuine discussions led to meaningful insights.
