DOE Announces Nearly $23 Million to Bolster Energy Security and Resilience
On September 26, the Department of Energy (DOE) announced nearly $23 million for ten projects to help make the nation’s energy systems more secure, resilient, and reliable. The projects, selected by CESER, will conduct research to advance mitigation strategies for a wide array of threats to the energy sector, including cyber and physical threats, climate-based hazards, and natural disasters. This funding will help drive research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) needed to achieve the Biden-Harris administration's ambitious clean energy and climate goals while enhancing the resiliency of America’s energy sector.
CESER Program Facilitates Public-Private and Intra-Sector Cybersecurity Collaboration
Every day, cybersecurity leaders defend critical energy infrastructure against ubiquitous cyber threats and cyber-enabled sabotage. Criminal hackers and America’s nation-state adversaries have demonstrated their intent to undermine U.S. national security and disrupt economic productivity, but these security leaders stand in the breach.??
As recently as four years ago, however, the U.S. government had few mechanisms to share information and exchange ideas with leaders responsible for the security of the devices and systems controlling electricity generation, natural gas processing, oil refining, and the many other critical functions that energy infrastructure asset-owners and operators provide on a daily basis. CESER has created the Operational Technology (OT) Defender Fellowship to begin to address this gap.
CyberForce? Alum Brings Cybersecurity Expertise to DOE’s Office of Electricity
As the need for cybersecurity professionals for critical energy infrastructure continues to grow, DOE’s CyberForce Competition? gives student participants a hands-on experience that helps them to hone their skills and better prepare for careers in the cybersecurity workforce, whether that is in the private sector, academia, or the public sector, including DOE. Having previously participated in the competition as a student on a collegiate team, Cole Smith of DOE’s Office of Electricity reflects on his journey, and how the CyberForce Competition played a role in his career.
