New Report Evaluates Clean Energy Cybersecurity Technology
On July 24, DOE’s Clean Energy Cybersecurity Accelerator? (CECA) program published a report?focused on the efficacy of a tool intended to help thwart cyber incidents against the energy sector. The CECA program, which is charged with expediting the development and deployment of innovative cybersecurity solutions for renewable energy resources, is supported by CESER and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). As part of the program’s second cohort, NREL researchers evaluated runZero, a cyber asset attack surface management product, to identify efficiencies and gaps in functionality and capabilities that will inform cybersecurity solutions for clean energy technology.?
Applications Open for DOE’s OT Defender Fellowship 2025 Cohort
Cybersecurity experts are increasing the first line of defense for the nation’s critical infrastructure. ?As the risk to physical infrastructure from cyber attacks continues to evolve, it’s important for the workforce behind our nation’s energy providers to grow to meet that risk. DOE wants you to become part of that expanding network of cyber defenders through its Operational Technology (OT) Defender Fellowship 2025 Cohort.??
CESER launched the OT Defender Fellowship in 2020 in collaboration with DOE’s Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and with support from the Foundation for Defense of Democracies’ (FDD) Center on Cyber and Technology Innovation (CCTI). Fellows in this selective year-long education program will gain a greater understanding of the OT threat landscape while strengthening their ability to defend critical energy infrastructure. This year's OT Defender Fellowship application opportunity closes August 29, 2024.
Collegiate Competitors Prevail in U.S. Department of Energy’s 2024 CyberForce? Conquer the Hill? Reign Competition
After hours of puzzling and problem-solving, Hunter Wittenborn, a student from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, emerged as champion of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) 2024 CyberForce? Conquer the Hill? Reign Competition. Hosted by CESER and the Argonne National Laboratory, Hunter competed with other collegiate students studying cybersecurity to tackle a series of challenges in a video game style escape room. The Reign Competition is part of DOE's CyberForce? Program, which aims to develop the next generation of cyber defenders for the energy sector. Through hands-on individual and team competitions, the program highlights the nexus of critical infrastructure and cybersecurity.??

DOE Leads Effort to Improve the Cybersecurity of Energy Supply Chains
On June 18, DOE released new Supply Chain Cybersecurity Principles,?developed in collaboration with Idaho National Laboratory. The principles establish best practices for cybersecurity throughout the supply chain that supports energy infrastructure. Developed for manufacturers and end users alike, the principles create a framework to strengthen key technologies used to manage and operate electricity, oil, and natural gas systems around the world. Several prominent suppliers and manufacturers serving the energy sector have expressed support for the principles, including GE Vernova, Schneider Electric, Hitachi Energy, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Rockwell Automation, Siemens, Siemens Energy, and Honeywell.
