CES 2017

January in 2017 out at Las Vegas, supposed to be hot right? After all it is the desert and hits highs of 115+ in the summer. It was downright cold, with lows in the 40’s. Now that does beat the single digits in Pennsylvania, but not exactly balmy warm I was anticipating.
I heard that the CES show offers plenty of opportunity to walk. I came to experience a show within shows. Having taken control of multiple major event locations like the Las Vegas Convention Center, Sands Convention Center, countless hotel hospitality suites and even parking lots; you get your exercise!
The only technology that really impressed me with potential for technology revolution was the use of hologram and augmented reality. From the scavenger hunt AR app driven by IBM ( https://www.ibm.com/thought-leadership/hidden-figures/) promoting women’s impact on the space race to the hologram at the Altec Lansing booth (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Shm0HCJNyU), CES did peak my interest. Flying home, I imagined having one of the AR/VR headsets to help escape the 5 hour flight. Also, imagine sitting in your living room, wondering what artist to download to your hologram device. Who would you pick? Elvis, Jim Morrison, a religious leader or maybe a deceased ancestor.
The Internet of Things seemed to be everywhere and I joked with a co-worker on my return that we could install a network card on my office door and use Amazon’s Alexa to control the state of the door.
Leaving the massive show of multiple shows, I can appreciate the two essential things in enabling the future of technology – bandwidth and energy. I hope in future shows there can be more of an #energy presence as #EnergyEnablesUs.
