Certified Licensing Professional

Everyone wishes to move forward, earn new credentials, and gain new experiences. I am no exception. Ever since I started working in the field of Intellectual Property Management, gaining new experiences and obtaining new credentials was always on my mind. While interacting with peers working at international Technology Transfer Offices, I observed they majorly had two credentials: Certified Licensing Professional and Registered Technology Transfer Professional. I set out to obtain either of these, so I spoke with them and learned more about these credentials. Certified Licensing Professional is a 3 years valid certification and is an internationally recognized credential. I share below the details of it and how it has been advantageous for me.

What is CLP: Certified Licensing Professional

?Eligibility: minimum 3 years experience in licensing, at least a bachelor's degree, and currently employed or have been employed in the field within the last 12 months.

?What is the definition of licensing: Check the candidate handbook for more details.

?Limited to USA residents or LES members: No, it's open to all licensing professionals across the world.

?How to achieve it: Take an exam which takes place twice a year in April and October. How to prepare for the exam: The candidate handbook is available with references for study and sample question paper

Upcoming exam window: September 15- October 31, 2022?

For deadlines: Refer to the candidate handbook

?How long is the certification valid: You need to re-certify after every 3 years and to qualify you to need to obtain credits through different activities as specified on the CLP website. For instance, attending workshops, presenting or conducting workshops, writing papers and articles or in full time job related to Licensing.

Why it was advantageous for me: It gave me a sense of confidence, a tool to connect with people, a belonging like doctors, CA other professionals have and respect. It also helped in achieving the next credential-Registered Technology Transfer Professional.

Stay tuned to know about the second credential i.e. RTTP and drop a comment if you now plan to pursue CLP :). If you have any particular questions regarding CLP process or the examination please get in touch with Ashley Bardsley, ICE-CCP
