Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM?)

Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM?)

If you lack project management experience to qualify for the Project Management Professional (PMP?) credential and desire certification, you might consider the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM?) credential.

Here’s what you should know about this certification:

  • This credential has been designed by PMI? to provide an entry-level certification to project management. Earning this credential indicates that you have the foundational knowledge and skills to serve your organization on project teams.
  • This credential can help you qualify for various project management roles such as project coordinator, project manager, project administrator, project team lead, and more project-related roles.
  • PMI? has upgraded the exam recently. Prior to the recent changes, applicants needed to understand the PMBOK?. Much more is now required. Applicants are expected to have a foundational knowledge of project management fundamentals, predictive methodologies, adaptive methodologies, and business analysis frameworks.
  • To qualify to take the exam, no experience is required, and you must complete at least 23 hours of project management education prior to taking the exam.
  • The PMI? member fee to take the exam and maintain your credential is $225 (as of September, 2024), The fee without membership is $300.
  • The exam consists of 150 questions which includes 15 non-scored test questions. The time to complete the exam is 3 hours.
  • The exam content includes 36% fundamentals and core concepts, 17% predictive methodologies, 20% adaptive (agile) methodologies, and 27% business analysis frameworks.
  • The certification is good for three years. To maintain certification, CAPM certification holders need to earn 15 professional development units (PDUs) in each three year cycle. A minimum of 9 PDUs must be educational. A maximum of 6 PDUs are allowed for “giving back” (teaching, presenting, creating content, volunteering, etc.).
  • Once you have earned your CAPM? and you have gained the appropriate experience, you may consider the Project Management Professional (PMP?) credential. The 35 hour educational requirement for the PMP? exam is waived for CAPM? credential holders.
  • If you are considering the CAPM? credential, please be sure to download the CAPM? Exam Content Outline (ECO) which defines the knowledge requirements for the exam.
