Certifications - a value or possibly a curse?
In my profession, it's not common to receive compensation for additional certifications. What I may receive is an acknowledgement for my new found knowledge if it drives success within the organization. I also gain more responsibility, which has its own challenges and rewards. Additionally, I may receive compensation for advanced degrees.
Do you provide compensation for certificates?
You you value certifications within your staff? If so, do you assist your employees with any form of recompense?
Conversely, is there a downside that needs to be further explored?

7 年No compensation for certs in my organization, the management of who has maintained a cert and who hasn't and perhaps would slide back on the pay scale would be... interesting. I am a fan of learning though and am working through a cert along with my classroom support staff. If they skill up and find more challenging work, great! If not, I'll have folks who have worked together toward a skill set that helps us better perform for our clients.

7 年I think the incentive approach is an interesting one, bottom line our industries won't be around much longer without more young people bringing new ideas into them. While I believe Glenn Sexton and nearly every other leader in our industry is right to pay for the upkeep of certs, I do believe in a some incentive for reaching a new level in personal achievement.

7 年I agree. I do see value in establishing a culture where we are always exploring, learning new things, and challenging ourselves. Certifications are one path to that end, but there are many. I encourage my staff to pursue something (further education, cert, skill, etc.) not necessarily because it is crucial to their role here or elsewhere, but because it fosters the type of environment I believe we should want to have. That said, most of my staff do not hold any certifications, and many do not have formal education of any kind. I continue to be amazed at what our team has been able to accomplish.
