We often find ourselves not being present and jumping from one task to another, assuming to be super productive as we are working on many things. When it is a matter of urgency and difficulty, we have a natural tendency to provide a response or reaction which is dominantly driven by our emotional thoughts.
But as a leader in today's VUCA business environment, we need to activate more creativity and innovation above the process - the 'deep' thinking. We need to limit the quick reaction and emotional thoughts conversely. And these new-normal leadership skills could be developed by being aware of our mind, time, energy.
According to James D’silva, Vice President in Business Development and Strategic Alliance, Telecommunications Company, US:
"The key to leadership skill is managing uncertainty! Why? A leader with a clear vision, a stable mind and has the ability to handle complex problems will have the ability to keep the business on track and achieve the team goals."
Covid 19 has brought a big impact to business leaders, a big challenge where they need to keep themselves motivated in the middle of a deep-sea full of uncertainty. The new reality made us realise that managing the mind is not an option; it is a must. Our brain is not programmed to accept any difference; it will try its best to drive away from any change. But it is also true that staying away from change will never give us solution-driven directions.
Leading Certainty in Uncertainty
Here are some guides to leaders in times of uncertainty. Taking these actions would allow for significant improvement in finding solutions, empowering the team, and elevating your organization to success - generating collective certainty at the workplace.
1. Accept changes for better outcomes: Ambitious leaders have an entrepreneurial mindset. They can think better in challenging situations. They constantly need to improve the skills they learn from mistakes and take continuous action on new ideas. In today’s highly changing work environment, who would not like to work with a leader like them and become one?
In crises, we want to solve the problems. But when nothing we could solve or do, we start accepting.
2. Think beyond the possibilities: When a leader’s mind is ready to accept the challenge, they automatically program their mind to see the possibilities. They are far more comfortable with any discomfort as they have chosen the challenge; it is not given or imposed. This mental readiness provides the leader with the drive against all the odds to reach their goals regardless.
3. Deep motivation drives the extra mile: Leaders do not hesitate to learn from failure, are not ashamed of setbacks and are not afraid to change direction or reset it. But one thing for sure - they never give up.
Being an ambitious leader in this ever-changing work environment, you are working longer hours, giving more time and energy while dealing with the high pressure of new challenges, automation, restructuring, or outsourcing.
At the end of the year, at the end of the quarter or the end of the day, once you sit quietly and evaluate your day, quarter or the year, you automatically assess it based on the time and energy you gave. In organisations, our KPIs are mostly set where the baselines are time and energy focused. But all this effort in managing time and energy starts from one point - managing our mind.
"Now is the time to be better at managing the mind. Once you do it, you also take over the control and drive with greater freedom to act courageous, think creative and stay conscious. Most importantly, living full-heartedly!"
