The CEP Roundup - June 7, 2024

Welcome to The CEP Roundup, The Center for Effective Philanthropy's LinkedIn-exclusive newsletter. We hope this collection helps you discover resources, ideas, and even colleagues in the philanthropic sector that can help you be more effective in your work.

Essential Reading

  • A decision was made in a U.S. federal court of appeals about the Fearless Fund case, which may be seen as a bellwether for how courts may view other efforts that seeks to address historical wrongs. Read about it here. If you're interested in understanding the case and this decision more deeply, join a Council on Foundations webinar about the ruling next Thursday, June 13.
  • "For anyone hoping that burnout in the nonprofit sector was a pandemic-era phenomenon that would recede like mask-wearing and social distancing, the latest report from the Center for Effective Philanthropy offers little reason for hope." So wrote Ben Gose in The Chronicle of Philanthropy on CEP's latest State of Nonprofits report. Read Gose's analysis of the new research here.
  • What is philanthropy's role in closing the racial wealth gap? A new publication from The Bridgespan Group offers an analysis of the drivers of the wealth gap as well as interventions funders can undertake to invest in change. Read up on these opportunities here.

  • CEP's Emma Relle offers an insight she is uniquely positioned to see as a CEP analyst working with dozens of funders: the crucial - and often unsung - role that grants management plays in effective funding. Grants management, she says, is less technical task and more "a feat of intentional, meticulous composition." Find out why here.

In Case You Missed It...

CEP released two new research reports since our last Roundup. In our second annual State of Nonprofits report, data from 239 nonprofit leaders CEP surveyed reveals that burnout and staffing issues continue to plague nonprofits. A related report released just this week features insight from foundation leaders about how they understand the state of well-being among their grantees and what they do to support it.
