Editor's Note: This edition of The CEP Roundup is focused on offering resources for funders on navigating the challenging and rapidly shifting environment created by the policies of the new Trump administration. We acknowledge that this offering is non-exhaustive, and encourage you to share, in the comments or via reposting, the resources, guidance, words of wisdom, or perspectives that you are finding most helpful right now.

First, if you feel (understandably) overwhelmed by the multitude of actions, Executive Orders (EOs), and statements - and their implications for nonprofits and philanthropy - begin with:
On Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
There are a number of EOs and statements that directly attack DEI programs within both the federal government and any institution that receives federal funding. Here are a few resources and informed perspectives on the issue:
On Federal Funding
While the Trump administrations initial "funding freeze" issued on Jan. 27 has since been lifted, a memorandum issued by the White House on Feb. 6 stated, "[i]t is the policy of [the Trump] Administration to stop funding NGOs that undermine the national interest." On what it means and how funders can respond:
On Dismantling U.S.A.I.D.
Causing massive upheaval for organizations, communities, and individuals on a global scale, one of the most far-reaching actions of the administration thus far has been the dismantling of USAID.

3 周Appreciate the vital reminder that Britt Lake and Melinda Tuan offers, that before funders take action, they must first listen. In times of uncertainty, the instinct to move quickly is understandable—but rushing forward without input from the communities they serve can lead to misaligned priorities and missed opportunities. Effective philanthropy isn’t just about responding—it’s about responding?wisely. Now is the time for funders to lean in with intention, engage in meaningful dialogue, and ensure decisions are guided by those most affected. Those who commit to deep listening today won’t just weather this crisis more effectively—they’ll lay the groundwork for stronger, more resilient communities in the long run. It is time for them to lead with clarity, courage, and an unwavering commitment to those they serve because it is needed now, more than ever!
Non-profit Leadership
3 周Thank you for posting these valuable resources. I would like to suggest CEP offer platform for debate and conversation with colleagues who are active members of Philanthropy Roundtable. Specifically, I would be keenly interested to know their positions regarding Elon Musk’s teams that are raiding the databases of Federal Agencies and disclosing personal information of employees. These same colleagues have, for many years, advocated to keep the identities of donors private culminating on the organizations endorsement of the Protecting Charitable Giving Act of 2024 sponsored by Senators Lankfort and Young. The act states: This legislation strengthens and reinforces the constitutional right to donor privacy by ensuring suitable penalties for criminals who leak Americans’ private information. Will these same Foundations take as firm a position to advocate for the rights of all American citizens and hold leakers to the same standard?
