Almost all leaders of a significant business or organisation know that they need strategy to run an organisation effectively and achieve sustainable business results. Most of these companies do some kind of work on their strategy. The strategic planning workshop is the most significant strategy work most of these companies do. The most serious ones commit a good number of days on strategy work every year; while the less serious ones commit as little as half a day.? In spite of some effort at strategy in most companies and businesses; the concern that most of what is being regarded as strategy work-including the popular and famous “strategic planning” is not strategy work at all but some other kind of thinking and planning work peppered with strategy lexicon and jargon.? There is nothing strategic in many so-called strategic plans which are being developed by companies, organisations and businesses around the world. According to some of the world’s leading authorities on strategy, even large American corporations, including many famous ones, are not immune to this endemic. Some strategy authorities are even discouraging the use of the term strategic planning because the term is misleading many organisational leaders, their top managers and their organisations to do poor or bad strategy work. ?

Over the years, I have read many texts on strategy , strategic thinking and strategists across the time spectrums back to Biblical times. I have reviewed many studies on the theory and practice of strategy by many scholars and thinkers on the same subject. Reports of poor and bad attention to strategy and strategic planning, and their use of, are more ubiquitous than most people think and more prevalent than what most leaders dare admit. ‘Strategy theory and application is in intensive care unit in many companies and organisations. This is also reported by many several researchers in some of the world leading educational institution and consulting firm. There is a lot of more strategy noise than strategy music.

I see this also in my work and interactions with many organizations especially in Zimbabwe. Leaders and top managers of these organisations are either not aware of their situation or they are in denial or they are “too busy “ to stop and rethink strategy.
