CEOs: How do you Decide Who to Keep, Who to Pause, Who to Go?

Today I want to talk to talk to you about people. Actually, about your people.

Right now, in this new context in which you and all of the other CEOs of small-to-medium sized businesses are facing, are thinking about our people. And one of the questions is: Who among those people should we keep? Who should we reorganize? How we are going to reposition our talent so that the business can not only survive but also thrive on the rebound out of the COVID-19 pandemic?

The traditional way to do that is to start thinking like this: Well, should I keep Bob? Would Bob be useful in the long-run, or in the mid-run?

I urge you to take a very different approach. Stop thinking about specific individuals. Instead, think about the functions that you need in your business. Ask yourself the question: In the new business, with the new plan, in the new post-pandemic era, what kind of functions do I need to fulfill the goals of my business? Design your functions, and then only then put various people into these functions, into the seats in the organization.

That approach will actually answer your question: Who should we keep and who should we maybe furlough, or let go?
