Indiana's longest-dancing professional contemporary dance company will be marking its 50th season with a new executive director.  DK is looking for a creative and thoughtful leader – one who inspires others with their passion – to advance artistic vision that furthers the organization's role as a premier hub for cultural engagement in central Indiana and continues the growth of strong education outreach programs. This leader will work in collaboration with Artistic Director David Hochoy and guest choreographers as they explore the limits of the human body as a means of expression creating rigorous and powerful performances. 

What makes this such an exciting opportunity for a new Executive Director?

  • Partners with the Artistic Director to conceive and implement a lively performing arts season, typically five professional performances, regional touring, plus student matinees and workshops. 
  • Promote and represent DK to local arts patrons – individuals, foundations, businesses and other arts organizations 
  • Be a vocal advocate for supporting arts in education and maximize learning opportunities
  • Collaboration with many local arts partners

  • Serve as a cultural ambassador of the Indianapolis community and the state of Indiana

This individual will explore opportunities to expand the cultural richness and diversity of the artistic and educational programs presented by DK and strive to present programs that broaden participation and engage new, diverse audiences. 

The Executive Director will be a thoughtful collaborator, adaptable and at ease with changing situations and shifts in the workday. They will demonstrate initiative and the ability to prioritize tasks and balance timelines to reach the desired outcomes. They will be an outgoing and effective communicator who is able to build relationships and networks with key stakeholders to further the mission of the organization. 

DK is governed by a 20-member Board of Directors. DK's annual budget is $1.35 mil with an endowment of $5 million. DK has 4 administrative employees, including the Executive Director, who partner with the Artistic Director, his production team, and 13 full-time dancers.

Responsibilities

In partnership with the Board of Directors, the ED provides vision, leadership, strategic direction, and management so that DK can achieve its goals for programmatic excellence, audience development and financial stability. 

The ED is responsible for all aspects of DK's administration and operations, including budgeting and financial management, strategic plan implementation, fundraising and patron development, marketing and audience development, artistic administration, performance support, school, facilities, and community engagement.

  • Leading Fund Development and Financial Sustainability
  • Raising the visibility of DK, locally and regionally 
  • Effectively Stewarding Relationships and Resources
  • Leading a committed staff team
  • Supporting the continued growth of the DK Dance School

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree desired; substantial experience can be substituted.  The ideal candidate will have demonstrated supervisory and leadership experience, with preference given to experience in performing arts management and creative arts. They will combine a passion for dance with a deep knowledge of administration and operations. 

The successful candidate shall demonstrate experience in being a strategic thinker who can inspire and align DK stakeholders around an exciting vision for DK's growth and development. The applicant will possess the ability to work with the Board of Directors and the Artistic Director on developing and executing new ideas for audience development and programming.

The Executive Director will have the ability to: execute a strategic plan, manage a budget, cultivate donors, expand our audience, and sustain program excellence. 

This individual must be willing to devote a substantial amount of time and energy to fundraising across individual, business, and institutional donors. Prefer established relationships with area foundations, arts patrons, and businesses.  They will have a track record of success with major gift fundraising and experience with fundraising campaigns.
