CEO on an Apprenticeship – Learn at a Higher Level with Itec

?

After organically working her way to the top, Chief Executive Officer of Cambridge Access Validating Agency Emily Ross found she was missing a grounding in the fundamental skills in her career. But how was she going to complete a qualification with a busy day-to-day working life?

Solution: A practical, flexible and accredited apprenticeship with Itec.

Emily said,

The content of my Leadership and Management Apprenticeship was pertinent to me and my career at the time. I was line managing a small number of staff, and I was a senior leader in the organisation, but I didn't have qualifications that were relevant to the content of my job.

During her time as an apprentice, Emily was promoted to CEO but continued her learning which was great value to her. Itec apprenticeships are designed to provide both theory and practical tools for learning on the job, offering flexibility in managing time.

The apprenticeship provided a more structured way to for me to gain access to expertise available to me. It provided the theory but it was very much designed around giving me the understanding and tools and techniques to draw out learning on the job. It was also flexible, so I could manage my own time and plan ahead.

Apprentices at every level are supported by Itec’s team of personal tutors who, as 100% employee owners of Itec, are 100% committed to learner experience.

The Itec tutor was brilliant. He was with us throughout the whole process. He was the first person that me and my employer met when we were interested in the apprenticeship, and then he was my personal tutor on the course.? He was really helpful, but he was also really disciplined about keeping me on track and making sure that we met regularly.

The highlight of Emily’s experience on a higher-level apprenticeship was access to experts in the field and the opportunity to meet other learners, which provided diverse perspectives on learning applications.

We saw lots of people with different expertise related to leadership and management. They all had their own take on things, but each unit complemented each other. It was also really nice to meet the other apprentices doing the program. Finding out how the learning applied in different industries was good.

Now Emily has graduated from her apprenticeship, she feels the difference her new skills are making day-to-day:

I consciously think ‘I wouldn't have approached this challenge in the same way had I not done the course’. So again, it's given tools and techniques to manage certain situations.
One of the key things that has come out of the course is it has given us a kind of a shorthand or a language to use in relation to when we're dealing with HR or dealing with management issues or anything like that. It just makes sure that we're speaking the same language, and we understand.
There might have been some practices that I was already doing, but I now understand better why I was doing them and the positive outcomes.
