CEO AdvisoHR - "What makes a CEO, well, a CEO?"

Question of the Week:

"What makes a CEO, well, a CEO?"

Dear CEO,

The journey to becoming a CEO often seems shrouded in mystery, but a recent analysis by Ian Hallett , detailed in his article "How To Behave Like A CEO" (1) sheds light on the key behaviors that distinguish successful CEOs from others.

Let’s look at these insights and explore how they align with a leadership strategy.

Debunking the Myths

Hallett starts by dispelling some common myths about CEOs:

  1. Charisma is Not a Requirement: Many successful CEOs are introverted and lead through reliability and decisiveness rather than charisma.
  2. A Perfect Career Path is Not Necessary: CEOs often experience failures that build their resilience and problem-solving skills.
  3. CEOs Don't Need All the Answers: They excel at asking the right questions and leveraging their team’s expertise.

The Four Key Behaviors of Successful CEOs

Hallett's research, involving 2,600 leaders, identifies four key behaviors that set successful CEOs apart:

  1. Decisiveness: The ability to make quick, confident decisions, even with incomplete information.
  2. Reliability: Consistently delivering results and building trust within the organization.
  3. Adaptability: Embracing change and continuously learning to stay ahead.
  4. Engaging for Impact: Inspiring and motivating others while effectively communicating and building strong relationships.

Applying These Behaviors in your Organization

As we reflect on these behaviors, it’s crucial to assess how they align with your own leadership practices. For instance, fostering a culture of decisiveness and adaptability can significantly enhance an organization’s agility in a rapidly changing business environment.

Conclusion

Understanding and cultivating these key behaviors can help not only identify potential future CEOs within our own organizations but also strengthen our overall leadership capabilities.

Great question Helder Figueiredo. For me what makes a great CEO is a great human being. We associate leadership with numbers, kpi and stuff to be done. However a leader is a person that inspire other humans to their full potential. What traits have you seen in great CEOs?

Thank you for sharing Helder Figueiredo and for the recommendation to read Ian Hallet's article. This is particularly useful for understanding that leadership is less about possessing a charismatic persona and more about practical, consistent actions that inspire trust and drive results.
