Centrifuges and How They are Used in the Industry

A Brief Overview of the Centrifugation Separation Process?

Centrifugal separators are named after the ‘centrifugal force’ which separates the solution and the particles. This process is mostly used to separate two unmixable substances in a solution. The design of the centrifugal separator is generally as described below:?

Design of Centrifugal Separator?

A centrifugal machine usually consists of a rotor, a bowl, a feed pipe, an outlet pipe, a drive mechanism, a separation chamber, a scraper, and a control panel.?

Rotor : This part of the separator creates a high force by spinning. Normally, the rotor will be placed in the central position of the machine. For the centrifugation process, the rotor is spun at a high speed.?

Bowl : The bowl for the separator is usually made with metal or composite. It serves to hold the material for the separation process and features a separation chamber to do so.?

Feed Pipe : Just like its name, the feed pipe is for feeding the mixture of solid-liquid suspensions, mixtures of liquids, and gas-liquid or gas-solid mixtures into the centrifuge separator.?

Drive Mechanism : For this part, could be a motor, a gas engine, or any source of power to help power the rotor and maintain its spinning activities.?

Scraper : Scraper is used to remove the residues left over in the bowl or the separation chamber.?

Control Panel : This control panel is to assist the operator in controlling the centrifugation process. The control panel enables the operator to monitor the performance of the separator and also to control the rotor’s speed.?

Working Principle of Centrifugal Separator?

Different from regular filters, a centrifugal separator doesn’t consist of a filter and only features an inlet, outlet, and separator chamber. The products (or mixtures) to be separated are fed into the separator to create a rotation. Then, the separator generates a spinning vortex, which leads to solid filtration from liquids. The separated solids are gathered at the separator’s bottom and are removed from there. High-density liquid flows down from the separator while low-density components and contaminants remain inside. As water is one of the higher-density liquids, it flows outside and is purged via a discharged outlet. As for the lower-density fluids (for example- oil), they are left at the vortex’s center. The purge system to remove the separated solids in the separator can be either manual or automatic.??

Areas of Application of Centrifugal Separators?

Centrifugal Separators are used in several industries where there is a need to separate two miscible products for processing. Here are some of the common applications of the separators:?

Food and Beverage Production : As food and beverage processes use a lot of water and also generate byproducts during production, centrifugal separators are widely used in this industry. Centrifugal separators are used for processing and recovery of non-liquid food products, wine and sugar processing, fruit and vegetable beverage production, and so on. Centrifugal separators are also used in milk and dairy products.?

Chemical and Plastic Productions : Water is utilized in various stages of chemical production. During the process, different types of byproducts are produced and might get mixed with water- creating pollution in the water stream. Industrial centrifugal separators can help remove water contamination and recover the end products during the process. These centrifugal separators are used for plastic manufacturing, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology sectors, and also for the production of non-fossil fuels and many others.??

Recycling : One of the biggest concerns for many recycling plants is the water impurities issue. Centrifugal separators can be used to treat and recover the end-products at recycling plants. These separators are largely used to recycle service water in many industrial processes. They are also used to separate animal slurry and biomass from water in several environmental processes.??
