MEDIA RELEASE: OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 6, 2023) – Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity (COHFH) will feature the special dedication of a house built primarily by female volunteers as part of COHFH’s annual Women Build event.
The new homeowner, Blaire R., and several members of the Women Build team, including Women Build Honorary Chair and Oklahoma City Police Department Capt. Michelle Henderson will attend the home dedication beginning at 2 p.m. tomorrow (Sept. 7), at 416 NW 83rd Street in Oklahoma City.
Henderson met Blaire R. and her parents during framing day in late April when the family brought snacks to the women builders. The police captain said the impact of speaking to Blaire had a positive impact on her team.
“You just can’t understand the impact that you have on someone’s life until you see them, and they tell you owning their own home wouldn’t be possible without you – it touched our hearts,” Henderson said.
She said this year’s volunteers come from a wide variety of different backgrounds, but each has one thing in common – the desire to give back to the greater Oklahoma City community. Known for having a warm and inviting atmosphere that emphasizes teamwork collaboration, this year’s COHFH Women Build includes volunteers from Zonta International, Pratt & Whitney, the Republican Women of Central Oklahoma and the Latino Women’s Group.
COHFH Chair/CEO Ann Felton Gilliland praised Henderson and the other volunteers for donating their time, energy and days off to help build a new home for Habitat.
“We’ve been fortunate to have many outstanding women to lead the charge as our honorary Women Build chair, and I’m excited Oklahoma County District Attorney Vicki Behenna has accepted the position for next year,” Felton Gilliland said. “Like Capt. Henderson, we’re excited by her leadership and passion to help limited-income families become homeowners. I encourage everyone to save the date for our next Women Build on May 4, 2024.”
She said Habitat believes everyone deserves a safe, decent and affordable home for themselves and their family.
“We may be able to help hard-working, limited income individuals and families to purchase a new, affordable and quality home at cost and without a down payment,” Felton Gilliand said.
To qualify, you must earn between a minimum gross household income of $45,000 per year to a maximum of $90,850, depending on the size of your family. The average monthly mortgage payment on a Habitat home is $1,500. The average home is $165,000.
