Center for Visual and Decision Informatics

The School of Data Science (SDS) (https://datascience.uncc.edu/) at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte is interested in reaching out to firms and agencies to explore possible participation on the Industry Advisory Board (IAB) for the Center for Visual and Decision Informatics (CVDI).

CVDI (see: https://nsfcvdi.org/) is one of several National Science Foundation (NSF) chartered Industry/University Collaborative Research Centers (I/U CRC). These centers (each of which has a specific domain focus) are made up of two components: (1) academic members who conduct data-centric research and; (2) industry partners who fund efforts and provide strategic direction via input through the IAB. CVDI's focus is on Data Science and development of "the next-generation visual and decision support tools."  UNC-Charlotte is one of six academic members of this Center.

In seeking candidates for IAB membership, SDS seeks prospective partners who have a need which can form the basis of a data-driven research question of value to their mission(s) as well as possible relevance to other IAB and academic participants. As an academic member of CVDI, SDS can assemble cross-disciplinary research teams to tackle challenges.

UNC-Charlotte's School of Data Science supports multidisciplinary data science research in areas such as text analysis (Natural Language Processing/Sentiment Analysis, etc.), image/video analysis, and visual analytics. There are multiple research efforts underway at the university employing Social Media and other structured and unstructured data sources to address real-world issues. Other current and recent research at the university involving Social Media derived data and that from other sources includes investigations aimed at detecting diseases and pathogens, online extremism in specific geospatial areas, the reception/perception of medical treatments of interest, social communications networks in organizations, misinformation dynamics, shark attacks, Human Trafficking, election outcomes, urban mega-events (sporting events, National Special Security Events - NSSE, etc.), use of specific consumer technologies and issues around sexual harassment.
