Cellular Subscriber Realizes 210% Download & 159,900% Upload Speed Increase - RF Interference Mitigation

Recently, I had a case demonstrating the importance of cellular signal boosters to rural subscribers.

Here's what happened.

The Offending Signal

An RF interference source was detected on multiple cellular towers as strong as -85 dBm.

Case studies on this type of interference have shown a negative impact to VoLTE MOS, uplink throughout, error correction, capacity, connectivity, and accessibility.

RF Interference Source Found

The RF interference source, generated by a malfunctioning signal booster, was tracked to an off-grid cabin in a remote part of the southwest.

Mitigation Situation

The booster owner is 79 years old and hasn't left the immediate area around his cabin for 6 years due to health issues. Vacant/abandoned lots surround him, and he is concerned for his safety.

His only connection to the outside world is through a smartphone; his main entertainment source is YouTube.

Before I arrived, the only way he could get indoor service was to stand by the kitchen window, which made watching YouTube or using his smartphone difficult.

Clearly, his old signal booster was jamming several cell towers and not providing him with coverage.

Mitigation Solution

It wasn't acceptable to ask him to turn off the booster per FCC rule 47 CFR 20.21.d.2.ii and leave him without service, and I would never do that without offering a replacement signal booster and help getting it setup correctly.

In this case, I climbed on the roof and installed/optimized a new donor antenna setup.

I installed a new signal booster inside.

Mitigation Result

There are two (2) categories of people helped by this RF interference mitigation project.

#1 - Network Subscribers

Eliminating the RF interference source improved network quality for the users served off the affected cell towers.

#2 - Cellular Subscriber Generating RF Interference

After I installed a new signal booster, the subscriber realized a 210% download and 159,900% upload speed increase at his kitchen table compared to baseline coverage without a booster.

The subscriber reported full bars of 5G throughout his entire cabin.

Standing at his kitchen window to use his phone is no longer necessary and he called several people who all commented on how much the auido quailty improved.
