Cell tower parts and what they do
So I spot cell towers everywhere nowadays. (I also see faces, but that is a whole other story… ?? )
I have learned there are 6 different types of cell towers, and now I am curious to know what parts towers consist of ??? .?
What are the important parts of a tower that give us all the fun and pleasure over the internet??
This is what I found:
Cell Towers have active and passive infrastructure. The active infrastructure is typically handled by Mobile Network Operators (such as AT&T, Vodafone, Telia, Orange, T-Mobile, Elisa etc.) and the passive by Tower Companies (such as American Tower, Cellnex Telecom, Vantage Towers, INWIT S.p.A., Telenor, Digita Oy, etc.).?
Here you can read more about tower companies. There are so many, and altogether they operate about 5.2 million tower sites around the world ?? !
Here is a quick checklist on who manages what and what the parts do:
Active Infrastructure (MNOs):
- Antennas: Devices that send and receive signals.

- Radio Units: Electronics that process radio signals.
- Coaxial Cables: Cables that transmit data signals.
- Base Band Unit (BBU): Controls radio signals and connects to the network.
- Base Station/Radio Network Controllers: Manage multiple cell sites and signal processing.
Passive Infrastructure (Tower companies):
- Mast: The main structure supporting antennas.
- Shelter: Houses equipment for protection.
- Fence/Access: Secures the site and controls entry.
- Power Supply/Transformer: Provides electricity to the equipment.
- HVAC System: Maintains optimal temperature for equipment.
- Plot of Land/Rooftop: Physical space where the tower and equipment are located.
Our RAIN -together with its own chatbot bRAIN- is a great partner for Tower Companies on the passive side of tower operations.?
I am so proud of RAIN, it’s helping all of us to have a better connection with everyone and everywhere!
PS. Have you started to spot cell towers yet? It's kind of fun ?? !
Retired finally
