The legendary Celia Cruz, affectionately known as the Queen of Salsa, continues to make history as she becomes the first Afro-Latina to appear on U.S. currency. The United States Mint has officially released a commemorative quarter featuring her image as part of its American Women Quarters Program? for 2025. This milestone not only honors Cruz’s unparalleled contributions to music and culture but also solidifies her legacy as a trailblazer for Afro-Latinas around the world.
From Humble Beginnings to Global Stardom
Celia Cruz’s journey to global fame began in the vibrant streets of Havana, Cuba, where she was born in 1925. Despite societal pressures to follow a more traditional path, Cruz was drawn to the world of music from an early age. Her extraordinary talent and magnetic personality quickly distinguished her from her peers. By the 1950s, Cruz had become the lead singer of La Sonora Matancera, one of Cuba’s most renowned orchestras. However, her career was marked by significant challenges, including exile from her beloved homeland after the Cuban Revolution. Undeterred, Cruz channeled her pain into her music, creating a powerful connection with exiles and Latinos worldwide.
A Cultural Icon with a Lasting Legacy
Celia Cruz was much more than a singer; she was a cultural ambassador who celebrated Afro-Latina identity through her music. By blending African rhythms with Latin sounds, she pioneered a genre that continues to inspire artists today. Throughout her illustrious six-decade career, Cruz recorded over 70 albums, earned 23 gold records, and received numerous accolades, including three GRAMMY? and four Latin GRAMMY? awards.
Her signature phrase, “?Azúcar!” (Sugar!), became a symbol of her zest for life and her ability to transform hardships into something sweet and celebratory. Cruz’s vibrant stage presence, elaborate costumes, and powerful voice made her an icon in Latin music and beyond.

Omer Pardillo-Cid, the executor of the Celia Cruz Estate, reflects on this historic honor: “Celia’s life exemplified resilience, talent, and passion. Being recognized on U.S. currency is a tribute she would have never imagined, yet it perfectly encapsulates the global influence she had. This quarter is a fitting tribute to her legacy.”
