Turning 40 coupled with the vivid spring changes I’m witnessing daily has me thinking a lot about transitions.
Life is always in transition. As soon as something begins it’s on its way toward ending. Every season is in flux. Every age leads to the next.
At times, life feels a little more stable and more predictable. You have solid footing. You can see the path ahead. Other times, everything is a swirl: there is uncertainty and volatility. The ground shifts beneath your feet. There is fog everywhere. You don’t know if you’re going up or down.
I think that this feeling of uncertainty, of “what’s next?” has been present for a lot of us for a while now. It certainly has been for me. I’ve done my best to make friends with it so that rather than living in terror, it’s exhilarating. I don’t know what’s around the next corner, but I do know I’ll learn and see and experience unpredictable things. I’ve also developed self-trust and a support network to feel safe. The unknown is novel. It’s filled with possibilities. And if I stumble or fall, it might hurt but it’ll be okay.
This is what I’ve been rediscovering in the final half of my thirties. I’ve got this. I’m powerful.?I’m safe to be myself in the world. It’s been a process of noticing and sloughing off my social and cultural programming, remembering who I am underneath it all. How to connect deeply with myself, with other humans, with the trees, with the world around me.?Getting out of my head and into my body and really?feeling?everything I experience.?Actively participating in my life rather than simply watching it happen to me. Choosing to do difficult things and treating them like science experiments or art projects. Remembering how to play. Being wildly enthusiastic about the smallest things.?
I am now, once again, that same enthusiastic weirdo I was as a kid, except I have more money and autonomy.?I have equipped myself with tools and re-learned how to be quiet, how to source approval from myself, how to let go of the need to control the things I can’t control, to surrender with sovereignty and open myself to receiving even better things than I can hope for.
So many of the things I wanted in my twenties are available to me. Whereas in my twenties, I was waiting for someone else to give me permission, now I simply go for it. I turn down the volume of the voice in my head that says “I can’t” or “It’ll be hard” or “What if I fail” and I just keep walking the path. It’s wild that it’s so simple. I made it so complicated before.
I can choose how I spend my time based on what feels good and exciting and connected.?I coach others and run my programs and retreats because I enjoy them and I love sharing the wisdom I’ve gained, witnessing and supporting other people in their transformation. I travel and go on adventures, meet fascinating people, and try to understand how their minds work. It fills my cup and I can share all of the overflows. I write stories and spend time in my garden and by the river. I dance and share my exuberance for life. I feel so very alive. I’m here in my life and I get to help others to be too.?
