A Celebration Of Reading, A Memorial To A Wonderful Writer
Today, March 2nd, marks National Read Across America Day, otherwise known as Dr. Seuss Day. This day in history links back to what is known as Dr. Seuss' birthday. Dr. Seuss is not longer alive, he would have been 113 this year. He lives on in his beloved books.
National Reading Across America Day was first initiated in May 1997 when a small group at the National Education Association decided that there needed to be a day to celebrate reading. They mentioned that while we have celebrations for sports and academic contests, we didn’t have any for reading. Therefore, in memoriam of Dr. Seuss, they declared that National Reading Across America Day would be placed on his birthday to show tribute to his tremendous impact on children's reading skills and creativity. There's so much that all of us, both young and old, can still learn from Dr. Seuss. His books were meant to teach, inspire, and share the love of reading he had with the world. With this in mind, National Reading Across America Day was created using his books and many others that children hold dearly.
Today, children all over the globe take part in a number of activities regarding the celebration of reading. After all, what can be more fun than spending the day with reading, crafts, and activities surrounding such an amazing purpose.
