A Celebration of Organic Chemistry 2023 - Focus on Stuart Macgregor

The?Society of Chemical Industry?invites you to 'A Celebration of Organic Chemistry 2023' on 25 & 26 September hosted by?Sygnature Discovery?(Alderley Park). This event will provide an overview of cutting-edge research with a series of lectures from leaders in the field. We asked our speakers some not-so-standard questions about the field and today we share the views from?Stuart Macgregor?from? 英国赫瑞瓦特大学

What do you most enjoy about your work?

The intellectual challenge of being presented with (often) disparate experimental results and then providing a new degree of understanding that rationalises the observations and (ideally) allows a prediction of how the work may be pursued or improved.?

Which other chemist do you most admire or has most influenced you?

Roald Hoffmann. A pioneer in the application of computational chemistry to transition metal systems and one with the vision to make connections across inorganic and organic chemistry that was crystallised in the Isolobal Principle. The clarity of the ideas expressed in his papers are always a delight.?

What one piece of advice would you have for a new PhD starting today?

As a PhD student I feel I benefitted hugely from exposure to a wide range of techniques and methods: synthesis, crystallography, electrochemistry, EPR and UV/vis spectroscopies and, oh yes, calculations (EHMO in those days!).??So my advice: take any opportunities to broaden your experience, find out what you really enjoy and pursue that in your career. But look out for opportunities where those other ideas you were exposed to may come in handy.?????

What is your favourite element?

The Platinum Group Metals: Ru, Rh, Pd; Os, Ir and Pt. Don’t ask me to choose between them (OK, maybe not Os).?
