Embracing YOU!
It’s been a historic year for women. There are more serving in Congress than ever before, and a record number are currently running for president in 2020. But even with these significant gains, women around the world, can still find gender equality elusive. For International Women’s Day this year, I asked some of the most interesting women we know to tell us: -What do you think is the biggest challenge facing women in Africa today? And what do you think is the biggest challenge facing women internationally today? Here’s what they had to say.
These current issues are circled by not truly being inclusive, true fairness at workplace, true evolution, true support. we find ourselves in an environment where when women speak up, it's deemed not OK. Yet men are celebrated when they flex their thoughts. DOUBLE societal norms. Recently reminded of this by helping victims of abuse, rape, and similar struggles, where we creating an environment any different in work environments? given the most recent examples from Google, MS, FB and others. As an individual we must voice inequalities, non inclusion and non committal environments. it's your right to be part of the change.
If the basis for women evolution is to truly embrace themselves and their abilities to make a difference where does it begin? as much as its part of our internal journey as women, men equally play a part in creating fair, inclusively evolved environment. creating environments that speak to this.
The summary include the following for women that represent the African continent
- The lack of women in positions of power
- Patriarchy
- Not enough women at the table
- Sexism, racism and economic inequality
- Trauma-centered feminism
- Access to equal opportunity
- Cultural barriers
- Navigating career and motherhood
- Societal oppression
- A campaign to normalize misogyny
- The economy is not working nor supportive for women
The upcoming focus and celebration of women reminded me of a recent experience that I personally experienced which talks directly to the struggles of 'modern' women's still face. From struggles of decades of past women, past sisters, past daughters from battling oppression, family ideas of whom you needed to be, societal beliefs in what you should look like, to racial barriers, displaced digitalisation power & ego's to 'modern' men. Women are know to lead with higher EQ than their counterparts, is this our worst enemy or best asset? Showing Up for women, Supporting women and Speaking Up for women is basic need.
Have you experienced any of the above? SAY I, ..................'I'
Society needs to be ready to support the change, be the change
