Celebration of a Great Life
Celebration of a Great Life: Congressman Elijah E. Cummings
(1951-2019)
In the US House of Congress, he was considered the North Star. He was considered the towering character of integrity. He was supposed to have memorized and told himself 20 times a day a poem from Benjamin Mays, “I only have a minute, 60 seconds in it,” he said. “Forced upon me, I did not choose it. But I know that I must use it, give account if I abuse it, suffer if I lose it. Only a little minute. “But eternity is in it.” It says it all, about life itself. Everyone should keep repeating it so that it reminds the one minute we are in this great universe, by the grace of God, not by our choice. He seems to have said often, “that our children are the living messages we send to the future we will never see.”
Hon Cummings also discussed his modest childhood and urged young graduates to learn from obstacles they might encounter in life. “Never forget the bridge that brought you over, “Do not let anybody define you. You must define yourself.” During that speech, he seems to have emphasized the importance of everyone coming together and concentrating on common goals. “My mission is one that comes out of a vision that was created long ago,” “It is a mission and a vision to empower people—to make realize that the power is within them and they too can do the things that they want to do.”
The House of Representatives renamed a bill that would lower the price of prescription drugs in honor of Elijah Cummings, the Maryland Democrat who died last week at the age of 68. California Rep. Karen Bass said that HR-3 was officially renamed the “Elijah E Cummings Lower Drug Costs Now Act. “He was a champion of a fight for everyone to have health care and medications that are affordable.” Hon. Barack Obama, Hon. William Clinton, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Hon Hillary Clinton and other dignitaries celebrated the life of Hon Elijah E Cummings on Friday. He fought for the “Soul of America.” May God Bless his soul.
