Celebration, Florida - Lessons Learned
It’s been nearly 20 years since I was part of the initial development team for Celebration, Florida – serving as Manager of Residential Architecture and Design and the founding Town Architect. Since leaving, I have had pleasure of making periodic trips back to Celebration to visit friends and give benchmarking tours to development and design professionals.
After most my recent trip to Celebration to attend the annual Founders Day Weekend, I was asked by a colleague “How does Celebration look and feel?” and “What are some of the biggest lessons learned and takeaways from Celebration? Answering the first question is easy. Celebration looks and feels great. It’s not perfect, but than nothing is. It has matured into a wonderful town and has achieved most, if not all, of the original development team’s goals. Answering the second question takes a bit more thought a time. There are a multitude of items that should and have been into other community development projects. There are also several items that if they had been incorporated into Celebration, would have made it even better.
Over the next few weeks, I will be sharing some of what I feel are the biggest lessons learned, both good and bad, from working on and revisiting Celebration.
