It’s that time of the year again... 2022 is almost over. This is the time we all look back and reflect on what we have achieved in the past 12 months. We look forward to what we want to pursue in the New Year. Cultures and traditions vary around the world, but no matter your belief or ethnicity, December to February are special months. Hanukkah, Christmas, and Chinese New Year - the celebrations may differ - yet we all look forward to some relaxation and social time with friends and loved ones.?
With the Holiday spirit in the air and communities all around the world getting ready to celebrate with family and friends, we asked ourselves the question: do people play more video games during the Holiday season?
Short answer: YES! According to Statista and NPD Group, video game sales are highly seasonal. Although the world has opened up again and people are keen to meet others and spend quality time together in person, it is impossible to ignore that historically, people spend more time playing games during this season. This is a combination of not only people being inside with friends and family but, of course, the cold weather (in the Northern Hemisphere at least).
Video games are an amazing way to spend time and interact with loved ones, in person or virtually. The large variety of games and genres available can bridge the generational divide. According to Verge Magazine, video games are not only a pleasant way to reset and relax, but they are also very classic gifts. In the UK, the age-old tradition of playing board games that exists in many families has been substituted for video games; according to Verge Magazine , they generate less conflict and improve interactivity.
With the holidays allowing people to spend time off from work, the purchase of new devices, consoles and titles peaks during this time of the year.
In 2020 and 2021, the video game market grew by 26%. According to Ampere Analysis, this was mainly attributed to the pandemic. However, in 2022 it won’t all be golden; as restrictions continued to ease, the economy took a hit. In turn, this has caused a decline in year-on-year sales. The slump in video game sales can partly be attributed to the lack of exciting upcoming AAA titles. This can be seen as a direct result of the lockdowns of 2020. That being said, gamers are as eager as ever and 2023 promises to show growth again in the marketplaces of PC, console and mobile. The prospects are overall positive.
We at 4Players are thankful for a great year made possible by our community (YOU!) and for the support and love that you shared throughout the year.?
4Players wishes you very Happy Holidays and a warm and joyous New Year. Thank you.
