What are some tips for building a strong personal brand as a freelancer?

What can you offer that others can’t? Perhaps it’s your unique design style, your exceptional customer service, or your ability to work incredibly fast without sacrificing quality. Make this your selling point.

Nobody likes listening to a Generalists. Today, people value leaders or speakers who have dig through a certain niche and have gained insights on a particular segment. Interestingly, on LinkedIn, I have observed people appreciating professional and non professional achievements of others or life lessons (not necessarily professional). Thus, for an aspiring leader, defining your niche where there is sizeable experience and lessons is most valuable.

We have much more limited time and energy than we care to admit. For both individuals and companies, the amount of resources we have to make a difference in the world is very small. Then, the idea of choosing a niche is not about limiting your options. It is about increasing your effectiveness by focusing your resources on a few activities within a narrower area of expertise. It doesn't mean you should limit your curiosity, but you'd better get your priorities straight as soon as possible if you want to make a difference anywhere. And all of this is me talking to myself, because I am the first one who keeps forgetting this key business principle... Don't make the same mistake :)

Start wide then narrow down as you go. Niching down especially if you’re new to the world of branding is hard. How can you niche down when you don’t even know what topic interests you the most? Start by exploring different fields. Write down all the fields (strategy, messaging, copywriting, positioning, design, marketing etc) then start creating content for each field. Ultimately you should be able to see where your interest lies by how much you’ve written (naturally) on a particular subject. Only then can you narrow down (niche down). P.S. if you can afford a consultant, hire one. Winging it isn’t as cool as other creators make it seem. By hiring an expert you’ll save a lot of time trying to experiment. Designing a solid brand identity is critical for every organization. Investing time in developing a brand that displays your - values - mission - concept is vital so your audience understands what your business deals in. This is the sure-fire way to differentiate yourself and build a brand that stands the test of time.

As I always talk on the podcast consistency is the key to success for any brand. You have to be consistent to stick to the minds of the clients better, and for them to be abe to understand what you in a precise and accurate way.

One of the most important and least understood pillars of building a personal brand is consistency and coherence or maintaining a brand integrity. If people aren't able to see a pattern, they seldom consider you a credible personal brand. Consistency, coherence and integrity is displayed in laying out content, logo, color schemes, tone and tenor of conversations.

It is important to be consistent and on brand always. In a chaotic world, consistency can be a refreshing change that people will find reassuring.

For me, a consistent identity requires rules. Rules around design, appearance, language and tone. But also rules around the content. I'm not confusing my personal brand with my personal life. Two VERY different things. My brand focuses on my expertise and professional interests, lightly infused with controlled aspects of my personal life for a humanising effect. I highly recommend setting the rules!

It's not storytelling if your stories?are only about your goods and services. That's an ad. Give yourself permission to tell more of your story. Telling YOUR story in a way that makes people stop scrolling and go, "Hol' up, I need to know more!"

You have to share stories with the audience, they need to be attached to you all the time. And you have to be in their minds even if they are not looking for a service from you at the moment so keep sharing stories will lead to you being the first option to pop in their mind once they do need a service.

Telling your own story and experiences is the main differentiator from everyone else. Anyone can read and give theory, but that applied to a big number of real cases… that’s just you!

1) You need to develop the skill of being able to effectively communicate your value at every opportunity in ways that don't come across as arrogant or braggadocious. Just like any other skill, this requires practice and an open approach to feedback - whether that's in the form of body language, people shifting to a new topic, or people leaning in and asking questions to learn more. 2) Always pay attention to the audience and tailor your message to their needs. In doing this, you will find them more receptive to your story and the brand narrative you've developed. 3) Get over the fear of being seen as self-promoting. You need to do that to succeed. When in doubt, remember points 1 & 2 above.

Creating content is also another way to provide value to prospects. It makes them see you as an authority in your niche. It shows that you know what you’re doing.

Showing is always more powerful than just telling. Make sure you practice what you preach. Your portfolio and proofs of concept need to be frequently updated with the cutting-edge. Showcase not just your historic wins, but also demonstrates how you adapt and expand your skills over time.

The simplest form of value is show your potential clients the outcome, not the process. Your ideal customer doesn’t care how, they want to solve for their pain points. Make it easier. Make it faster. Make it safer. Make it more cost effective. Make it more efficient. Solve for their need. That’s your value. Nothing more.

To build a strong personal brand as a freelancer, define your unique value proposition and maintain a professional online presence with consistent branding across platforms. Share expertise through content creation like blogging or social media posts. Engage in networking, and showcase successes with client testimonials and case studies. Stay updated with industry trends for continuous skill development. Incorporate personal storytelling to make your brand relatable. Always communicate professionally and consider specializing in a niche to stand out. This approach ensures clarity and consistency in your brand, establishing you as a trustworthy, skilled professional in your field.

So often overlooked. Don’t just package up the deliverables; the what and the how. Make sure to package up and articulate the impact. Which should also help instill practices such as defining what success looks like from the start.

BUILDING A NETWORK REQUIRES YOU TO PROVIDE VALUE. From my perspective, this is integral to every step. Your ability to build your brand is directly proportional to the consistency and quality of value that you provide. Advice from my experience is to provide more value than others provide for payment. If you are interested in becoming a reputable person (brand), it starts and ends with your ability to CONSISTENTLY CREATE VALUE for other individuals. How you achieve that is by actively involving yourself with the individuals in your network. THINK HOW YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE OTHERS PROVIDE VALUE FOR YOU! If you look for a quick way to become a personal brand it'll be transparent. Give without expectation = boost your reputation!

I always believe in a age-old adage "Your network is your networth". The more handshakes you do, the better is your worth! I strongly recommend young entrepreneurs or business owners to join Networking forums for 2 reasons: 1. You learn from others - how they dress, how they interact, how they transact, what do they do etc. 2. When you are standing on the same platform or under the same umbrella of networking forum, you are equal to the one standing next to you.

Be consistent, be present, speak from your heart and be yourself, stick to your niche and expertise, network - network - network, and build partnerships But, build genuine relationships: Instead of networking for personal branding, develop trusting, beneficial connections. Talk to them and help them.

I want to throw this response in here for any natural introverts: networking can seem daunting if you're naturally a quiet person. That's ok. You can still do this! The key is to try to keep yourself open to the potential in other people to be cool. Seriously - assume that the people you're trying to network with are very interesting and very interested in your ideas. It's a construct that you can use to steel yourself against the anxiety that can hit introverts like a freight train when they try to leave their comfort zones.

Keep learning and improving your skills so that your clients will believe your story and attach more to it. And at the same time they will be more sure to the fact that you are improving and are really working to improve your skills and the service tou provide.

A word of caution, "stay on top of the latest trends" means to be aware of what is popular, if you want to stand out and make an impression, being like everyone else isn't how to do it. Keep up with trends, sure, but then put your own spin on it or work it into a larger project or design where it makes sense. Trends come and go, so sprinkle them in with care.

Create a section that maps out action points for progress, adaptation, or change. Integrate these action points into a larger goals-focused timeline. Keep things clear, keep your methods consistent.

Self improvement and learning should never stop. Imagine two pictures. One is a beautiful, clear, running river with because of constant oxygenation and removal of debris. Then think about a puddle of water in the corner of field, without any appeal to jump into. Which of these are you? The metaphoric analogy applies here. Do you seek inspiration for renewal (in the case of the river new snow melt, oxygenation). Are you like a car stuck in traffic or do you find alternative routes to get to a new place? Maya Angelou said: “if you don’t like something change it and if you can’t change it, change your attitude about it.” Often a pivot is far more important than doubling or tripling effort.

The major challenge for many freelancers is that they are too focused on their clients and projects, and not enough on building their brand. Yet, that's exactly how you catch the eye of clients. LinkedIn is the go to, but the challenge of standing out becomes greater. How do you go about it? Make choices. Describe in your headline what you can specifically offer clients in your domain, or mention your niche. For instance, 'online marketer' becomes 'lead generation via AdWords.' Share your expertise, take a stance, and declare your vision. Stop selling, start telling. This builds trust with prospects.. Think network-oriented. Connect with industry experts a,d big fishes with a larger reach. Give love to your networ & target audience.

Build Five Star Relationships. With credible, connected people in your industry. With ideal clients or strategic partners! Have conversations and build trust! Organise your testimonials and write them for others.

There are too many freelancers out here, including me. All of us are exposed to same content, same ideas and same traffic. What we implement and how we execute creates the difference. Don’t rush into picking up clients, understand the business. Word of mouth matters - Good or Bad.
