Celebrating Youth Day: Empowering the Future Leaders of South Africa

As we commemorate Youth Day in South Africa, we have a profound opportunity to reflect upon the historical significance of this day and acknowledge the incredible contributions of the youth in our nation's growth. On this momentous occasion, we not only pay homage to the brave students of 1976 but also recognise the potential and resilience of our present-day young minds.

Today, Youth Day represents far more than a historical event. It symbolises the spirit of unity, resilience, and determination that resides within our young people. It is a day to acknowledge the enormous potential of our youth and to invest in their growth, development, and empowerment. South Africa's youth are the driving force behind progress, innovation, and change, and it is our collective responsibility to nurture and support their aspirations.

We firmly believe in the power of youth and the fresh perspectives they bring, so instead of us telling you what we think, we decided to hand the mic over to our talented youth, our interns, who have been an integral part of our team.?

Zoe Foale , a recent Bachelor of Architectural Studies (BAS) at UCT graduate, started her internship with us early this year. She offered some advice to fellow youth looking at going into architecture: “Although the path towards becoming an architect is long and demanding, I would suggest that anyone who is drawn to the field apply themselves to the process. While the training is certainly arduous, architecture is an exciting field of work which is constantly changing and evolving. There are many elements that are both fulfilling and fun. Also, the skills that are learned may be applied in other professions within the design world. From the construction of buildings, to the development of new materials, to socially and environmentally-friendly design – there always something new to learn.”

Courtney Morton ’s advice to young people interest in architecture is that “it is important to immerse yourself in different cultures and architectural experiences to get a better understanding of the history and cultural significance of architecture and how it has affected our world. If you are a creative and open-minded person who feels a need to express yourself creatively and design more safe and sustainable spaces for all people from all walks of life then architecture is definitely for you, just be prepared for hard work and some late nights!”

At KMH, we actively cultivate an environment that encourages the involvement of young people. Our internship program, job shadowing opportunities, and networking events provide valuable platforms for aspiring architects to gain first-hand experience and exposure to the industry. We believe in providing a space where young talents can explore various aspects of architecture, interact with professionals, and unlock their full potential.

We also spoke to Fikile Nyezi about his experience at KMH and any advice he would like to share. He told us “It has been a gradual incline which has made learning from the staff in the office more productive. Giving an opportunity, which may not always be there, to understand the importance and depth needed to create architecture. KMH has struck a seamless balance consisting of staff with various skill sets and of different age groups.” Fikile offered the following advice to fellow youth: “Become a nerd within the aspects of architecture that interest you. In architecture, that nuance and specification will take you far in a space filled with generalists. This could open doors to more experiences that can teach you more about what you might not know or have a depth of knowledge in.”

KMH celebrates the immense potential of South Africa's youth and reaffirm our commitment to providing them with opportunities, mentorship, and a platform to excel. By empowering the next generation, we pave the way for a prosperous and inclusive future for all.

When speaking with Ts’epang Mahlehla about his thoughts on what KMH does to uplift South African youth, he replied, “In regard to KMH providing a space for youth in the architectural industry, I can wholeheartedly affirm that it does. KMH actively cultivates an environment that encourages the involvement of young people. Their internship program, job shadowing opportunities, and networking events provide valuable platforms for aspiring architects to gain first-hand experience and exposure to the industry. This inclusive approach has made a positive impact on me personally, as it has opened doors for me to explore various aspects of architecture and interact with professionals in the field.”

Similarly Thandeka Cindi mentioned that KMH “provides a place for youth in the industry because of the variety of professionals in the office, they range from young professionals to professionals who have been in the industry for a long time and everyone has the opportunity to experience and learn from one another, more especially when tackling new opportunities.”

These insightful words from our interns reflect the positive impact we strive to make on the lives of young individuals pursuing their passion for architecture. Our commitment to youth empowerment goes beyond mere words; it is deeply ingrained in our organisational culture and practices.

Join us in celebrating Youth Day and empowering the future leaders of South Africa. Together, let's create an environment that fosters growth, innovation, and opportunity for our youth, ensuring a brighter, more inclusive tomorrow.
