Celebrating Yourself [Birthday Surprise Inside]

Celebrating Yourself [Birthday Surprise Inside]

I am officially in celebration mode! Not only is it my birthday, but it is also Active Potential Coaching's 2nd birthday. So, this edition will be short and super, duper sweet.

You may be thinking... what could a coach have to say about birthdays? I respond with.. A LOT. Birthdays are an opportunity to celebrate ourselves and our contribution to the world. We all have impact on our world in some way. Some of us have volunteered and sewed seeds of hope into our communities. Some of us have contributed to projects at work that have made life easier for others. Some of us are role models for our kids, nieces, nephews, or others and inspire them to see and be the best version of themselves. Some of us have been beams of light on someone's cloudy day by simply giving them a compliment or showing a little appreciation. It doesn't matter what your contribution is, you just have to know it exists. And because it exists, you deserve to be celebrated.

Looking for my advice... If at all possible (I know it's not always possible).

do not go to work on your birthday!

Use your birthday as an opportunity to celebrate yourself and show yourself appreciation for all you have done. Here are the two things I do every year for my birthday.

#1 - I Reflect and Plan!

As I previously stated, you have contributed to the world and you have accomplished something during your previous year of life. Maybe you find it challenging to recognize your achievements or maybe you minimize them as not worthy of celebration. These are the exact reasons I find it important to do a year in review. Every single birthday, I put my entire life into perspective by doing a deep dive into my prior year of life. I sit and reflect on every major area of my life (family, friends, career, finances, recreation, physical/mental health, etc.). I note what went well, what didn't go well, and how I can improve each area. I also note specific lessons I've learned over the past year that I feel will be valuable in the future. This exercise not only grounds me, but it helps me appreciate all areas of life, good and not so good.

#2 - I Do What I Want!

Yes, I take off of work. I need a break from the everyday routine. I need a little freedom. This can be especially nice when you have somewhere to send the kids or they are in school. This creates the space for you to take care of you and have a moment (no matter how short or long) free of the demands, needs, or expectations of others.

During this moment, do something you want to do. At a minimum, I take myself out to my favorite lunch spot and order my favorite meal. Then, I go to the movies, which is my favorite past time. This may sound lame to some, but it works for me. Find what works for you. What are two things you can plan for your birthday? Lunch with friends. A day trip or staycation. A big trip to somewhere you've always wanted to visit. Try not to consider the opinions of others and do what genuinely feels good to you. YOU DESERVE IT!

I find these rituals incredibly beneficial and share them just in case you could benefit from them as well. Getting out of our normal routine to really focus on ourselves is just as necessary as our 9 - 5. Though being in the office may be fulfilling or required, we must all find balance between working to survive and living to thrive.

Enjoy your day! :)
