Buyer preferences changing? Not so fast! Buyers are leaving the lot with more new cars but they still prefer to buy used if presented the opportunity. In 2023, the number of new vehicle registrations increased 12.5% to 15.3 million compared to 13.6M in 2022. For used vehicles, even with a 1.5% decrease from 2022, there were 38.2 million used registrations in 2023, over double the number of new vehicle registrations.

Dealer profits are still shrinking. On average, car buyers are paying 97.6% of the manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP). In April, the average MSRP increased 2.2% and is up 1.3% year over year. If car buyers are paying more money for their vehicles, they want more value out of their investment.
