Today marks World Mental Health Day, and I’m thrilled to share some wonderful news—I'm releasing an anthology that you've been eagerly awaiting!
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) (NIMH) indicates that about 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness, and among those, many cite work as a significant contributing factor.
In a world overflowing with "workplace wellness advice," this collection brings together insights from a distinguished physician, clinical social workers, and psychologists from New Jersey to Hawaii who are also leaders and women of color. I had the privilege of collaborating with brilliant minds like Pamela Buchanan MD , Dr. LaTia Greer, Psy.D., LCPC, CIMHP,CCTP , Dr. Fatimah Turner , Tateanna Foster , Jessica H. Leigh, and Elona Washington, MSM —featuring a powerful foreword by the incredible Marc Lamont Hill !
Here’s a glimpse into my chapter in "Healing in Color":
As I stumbled into my office, exhaustion weighing heavily on my shoulders, tears streamed down my cheeks, a silent testament to the battles fought within. My therapist's words echoed in my mind like a mantra, "If you're okay, your boys will be okay."
Each morning, I poured every ounce of my being into crafting a fa?ade of normalcy, clinging to the hope that somehow, it would be enough... In the nuanced corridors of professional life, where the hum of productivity masks the deeper undercurrents, people of color (POC) often navigate a terrain laden with unspoken challenges.
The impact of work environments on POC is a subject frequently overlooked in the broader discourse, yet it is an experience marked by a unique blend of resilience and strain.
Understanding how trauma manifests in these spaces—sometimes subtly, sometimes starkly—is essential for fostering workplaces that are not just inclusive but also genuinely supportive.
