Understanding World Environment Day

World Environment Day , celebrated annually on June 5th, serves as a global platform to raise awareness and catalyze action on pressing environmental issues. This year, the theme is land restoration, stopping desertification, and building drought resilience: - all critical areas to promote sustainable livelihoods for present and future generations.

The Current Devastation and Efforts for Recovery

In the face of global food security, one of the most significant threats we encounter today is the relentless march of desertification and land degradation. These environmental challenges have far-reaching impacts, affecting the livelihoods of millions across the globe.

According to the UNCCD Data Dashboard , a staggering 15.5% of the world’s reported land is being degraded. This alarming trend exposes approximately 1.2 billion people worldwide to the harsh realities of land degradation.

Each year, we lose a total area half the size of the European Union (4.18 million km2) to degradation. But amidst these daunting figures, hope springs eternal. Across the globe, efforts are underway to combat these challenges. One such initiative is the Great Green Wall in Africa . Launched in 2007 by the African Union, this ambitious project aims to restore the continent’s degraded landscapes and transform millions of lives in one of the world’s most vulnerable regions, the Sahel. The initiative has set an ambitious goal to restore 100 million hectares of currently degraded land, sequester 250 million tons of carbon, and create 10 million green jobs by 2030.

iGravity’s Commitment to Land Restoration and Drought Resilience

At iGravity , our mission is to leverage finance for social and environmental outcomes. We believe that impact investments can drive profound change, addressing critical global challenges such as land degradation and desertification.

Our initiatives are designed to create measurable positive outcomes, empowering communities and fostering resilience, and some of them in 2023 directly aligning with this year's World Environment Day theme:

  • Sustainable Agriculture in Ghana : We have provided debt financing to milled rice producers and processors in Northern Ghana. This initiative has reduced local communities' dependence on external food sources and created jobs. By fostering economic stability and promoting sustainable land management, we contribute to the fight against desertification.
  • Empowering Women Farmers in Malawi : Our provision of solar-powered irrigation solutions to smallholder farmers, with a focus on women, has increased access to efficient water management systems. This has resulted in a boost of efficiency and crop yields, improving the quality of life for over 400 people in the region. These efforts directly enhance drought resilience and support sustainable agricultural practices.

Practical Steps to Make a Difference

Everyone has a role to play in building a sustainable and resilient future. Here’s how you can contribute:

  • As Individuals: Adopt sustainable practices such as reducing water waste, supporting local and sustainable agriculture, and participating in community tree-planting initiatives. Simple actions like reducing your carbon footprint and using renewable energy sources can make a significant impact.
  • As Small Enterprises: Implement sustainable business practices such as energy-efficient technologies, waste reduction strategies, and sourcing from sustainable suppliers. Support and invest in local environmental initiatives that align with your business values.
  • As Investors and Partners: Partner with iGravity to amplify your impact. Our projects offer opportunities to invest in sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and community resilience initiatives. By investing with us, you can help drive meaningful change and contribute to the global effort to restore our environment.

We invite you to reach out and explore how we can collaborate to make a difference. Together, we can restore our land, halt desertification, and build a resilient future.
