Celebrating Womens History Month

Celebrating Womens History Month

Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated.

?????????????????????????????????Together we can forge women's equality.

As the CEO of a 22-year-old technology company I welcome the month of March each year as a celebration of Women’s History Month. It was a challenging start in 1999 for a female in technology and hospitality, but worth every struggle to see how far women have come in my field. Together we can continue to support our daughters, sisters and friends to fulfill all their dreams.

As we celebrate Women's History Month lets remind ourselves of the accomplishments of women throughout the years to our culture and society. From science to politics, it’s a chance to reflect on the pioneering women who led the way for change and the current day trail blazers who are continuing to pave the way.

International Women's Day can trace it roots back to 1857 and the revolt of American women in New York City protesting working conditions in the textile and garment industry, although it wasn't proclaimed as a holiday until 1910. Support of International Women's Day dwindled over the years, but experienced a revival during the women's movement of the 1960's. Other countries soon followed suit and in 1975 the United Nations began sponsoring International Women's Day.

It wasn’t until March 1980 when President Jimmy Carter issued a Presidential Message to the American people, encouraging the recognition and celebration of women's historic accomplishments during the week of March 8th, Women's History Week.

However, it wasn't until 1987, at the request of women's organizations, museums, libraries, youth leaders, and educators throughout the country, that National Women's History Project successfully petitioned Congress to expand the celebrations to the entire month of March. Let's pay tribute and give thanks to all the women in our lives making a difference this month.
