Celebrating Women’s History Month: How You Can Make a Difference

March is Women’s History Month—a time to recognize and honor the contributions of women throughout history and in our modern world. It’s a moment to reflect on progress, celebrate achievements, and commit to furthering gender equality. But supporting and empowering women shouldn’t be confined to just one month; it’s work that matters all year long.

A Brief History of Women’s History Month

Women’s History Month traces its origins back to International Women’s Day (March 8th), which has been celebrated since the early 1900s. In the United States, it officially began as Women’s History Week in 1980, championed by the National Women’s History Project and recognized by President Jimmy Carter. By 1987, Congress designated March as Women’s History Month, encouraging schools, organizations, and communities to highlight women’s contributions in various fields, from science and politics to business and the arts.

Today, Women’s History Month is a global celebration of the achievements of women—and a reminder of the work that still needs to be done to achieve true equity.

Five Ways to Empower Women—Today and Every Day

We believe everyone has a role in supporting and uplifting women. Here are five meaningful ways to contribute to the success of women, no matter who you are:

1. Amplify Women’s Voices

Women’s contributions often go unnoticed or undervalued. Actively support and amplify the voices of women in meetings, on social media, and in leadership discussions. Recognizing and elevating female perspectives helps create more inclusive spaces.

2. Support Women-Owned Businesses

One simple yet powerful way to empower women economically is by purchasing from women-owned businesses. Seek out female entrepreneurs and promote their work to help foster financial independence and business growth.

3. Mentor and Sponsor Women in the Workplace

If you’re in a leadership position, advocate for women’s career growth by providing mentorship, sponsorship, and access to opportunities. If you’re earlier in your career, seek out female mentors and help create a culture where women’s success is celebrated.

4. Challenge Bias and Advocate for Inclusion

Gender bias—whether conscious or unconscious—still affects hiring decisions, promotions, and workplace dynamics. Be an ally by challenging stereotypes, calling out inequality, and advocating for policies that create equitable workplaces.

5. Invest in Women’s Leadership and Education

Support initiatives that help women develop leadership skills, access education, and gain professional opportunities. Organizations like the International Association of Women (IAW) offer mentorship, networking, and development programs designed to help women thrive in their careers.

Why Women’s Empowerment Matters Year-Round

While March provides a dedicated time to celebrate women’s achievements, gender equality isn’t a one-month conversation. Women still face barriers in leadership, wage gaps, and underrepresentation in key industries. By committing to women’s empowerment year-round, we foster stronger communities, more innovative workplaces, and a future where opportunities are truly equal for all.

One powerful way to stay engaged is by attending events and initiatives that uplift and support women’s growth.
