Celebrating women's achievements in the tool and cutter grinding industry in International Women's Day 2024
ANCA CNC Machines
World leaders in the design and manufacture of CNC tool and cutter grinders.
At ANCA, we believe that recognising and celebrating the contributions of women in tool and cutter grinding is a vital step towards unlocking the industry's true potential. By embracing and empowering women, we discover a wealth of diverse perspectives, fresh ideas, and extraordinary talent.
In 2023, we launched the first Female Machinist Award - a prestigious accolade that aims to recognise and honour the outstanding achievements of female machinists in the tool and cutter grinding industry. The award was met with enthusiasm from individuals who were proudly passionate about their craft and committed in their contributions to the excellence and advancement of the industry.
This International Women's Day, we are proud to highlight four trailblazing female machinists who are making their mark in the industry.
LENA RISSE - RISSE WERKZEUGTECHNIK GMBH
Like many people, Lena Risse didn’t know what career to pursue when she entered young adulthood in 2017. Now she’s won ANCA’s inaugural Female Machinist of the Year contest.
Lena studied media technology at university for a time, and began a related apprenticeship in supporting trade fairs and concerts, but it didn’t suit her. Then at 19 she decided to give tool grinding a try, an option that seemed simultaneously obvious and crazy. Obvious, because her father Horst Risse was running a one man tool grinding company with such love and dedication that he routinely says he’ll be standing at a machine when he’s 85. And crazy because to this day, Lena finds so few females in the field, though she’ll convincingly explain why that should not be the case.

ALEIGHA SCHULKE - ANCA INC
Growing up surrounded by the mechanical world, Aleigha S. 's interest in machines started at a young age. Inspired by her unconventional grandparents and their hours spent on mechanical pursuits, she developed a fascination for understanding how things work. Aleigha said, “I liked tinkering with gadgets, and exploring the inner of mechanical devices. I often took things apart or watched my grandparents tear apart the ‘64 Chevelle for hours even if I had school the next day.”

ELLEN ROBSON - RENOVO SOLUTIONS LTD.
When Ellen Robson left school at 16, she didn’t know exactly what career to pursue, but she knew it would be in engineering. She grew up surrounded by a family of engineers, though she also witnessed the hollowing out of manufacturing in the northeast of England, where she lives. So, when she interviewed with Antony Gray , who in 2019 was creating the first new tool grinding company in the region in years, she knew it was the perfect fit. It was also a chance to help reverse the loss of industry in the area. Now she’s an ANCA CNC precision tool grinder at Renovo Solutions Ltd. , in Stanley, United Kingdom. She’s also a finalist in ANCA’s first female Machinist of the Year contest, held in 2023.

KAJAL BHARAT PADWAL - HRITHIK TOOLS
Kajal Bharat Padwal, a finalist in ANCA’s inaugural Female Machinist of the Year 2023 competition, is definitely a champ at Hrithik Tools in Pune, India. Hrithik is an ISO certified company serving the automobile, engineering, and textile sectors with a wide variety of special tools, and as the senior production engineer, Padwal is an essential part of their success. Likewise, she relishes the fact that their small size (two ANCA FX5 Linear tool grinders plus support equipment) gives her the opportunity to contribute to virtually every facet of the business.
