International Women’s Day is like a bookmark in women’s history. The sacrifice, determination and courage of our ancestors are inspiring, to say the least, and that’s why we pay our respects to them every year on International Women’s Day. From the past fights to today, women have always been present in the workforce. Unfortunately, the workplace can be an obstacle for a woman. The wage gap, glass ceiling, uneven opportunities for the future - these are just some examples of how that can happen.
Women make up almost half of the workforce, so celebrating them in the workplace shouldn’t just be limited to one day. But women’s day has its own significance; so, instead of celebrating women just for the sake of celebration, let’s take this as a bonus. If you’re wondering how you can celebrate the women in your workplace, we compiled some suggestions below. Keep reading!
Celebrating Women in the Workplace: How to Do it in a Way That Matters
1. Acknowledge and Educate
Acknowledging is the first step of taking action. Acknowledge the events that happened in the past that gave us the freedom we have now. Educate yourselves about the present inequalities and be ready to support women whenever they might need it.
There are sessions that talk about how important Women’s Day is or how it came around. Instead of focusing on the same old topic this year, take this chance to acknowledge the women that are present in the current space. Let them know their presence is recognized and appreciated. Acknowledge the effort they put in to get to their positions. Educate yourself (and everyone else) about the existing biases or inequalities that can slow down or affect more women getting the same opportunities in future.
2. Challenge Current Inequalities
Sadly, there are a lot of obstacles faced by working women. The wage gap, not having enough representation in the decision-making positions, the glass ceiling - these are a few that are noticeably affecting the goal of equality in workspaces. But other than these, there are many factors like unsatisfactory maternal leave or unfair work conditions that people rarely talk about.

Acknowledgement will have no impact if the norms aren’t challenged. . So, work against these existing issues and ensure the women in your workplace have a level playing field and equal chance at getting new opportunities.
3. Don’t Just Talk the Talk, Walk the Talk
?You can of course donate to good causes all year round, but you can specifically target this day for public donations and to encourage more people to donate. It is better to donate to your local charities or causes that support women, but if you want a different option, you can donate to small businesses owned or run by women (especially women of color).
Celebrating women’s day goes beyond one day of wearing purple and social media posts. Of course, there is no harm in doing that, but there are bigger things that need our attention, and you can start by focusing on those this year.
