Celebrating the Women of Terracon - Diana Cámara

In honour of #womenshistorymonth we are continuing to celebrate some of the brilliant and powerful women we are fortunate to have at Terracon Geotechnique Ltd.; and rather than keep them to ourselves, we want to introduce them to you!

?

Please allow us to introduce Diana Cámara!

?

Its been almost a year since Diana embarked on her journey with Terracon. After completing her undergraduate studies in Mining Engineering from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú , she pursued her Masters in Mining Geomechanics from 澳大利亚科廷科技大学 in Australia. During this time, she had the opportunity to refine her skills as a Mining Geotechnical Engineer at a Gold Fields mine site in Kambalda, Western Australia. Coincidentally, Terracon was in the process of establishing our Mining Geotechnical Group when Diana decided to move to Canada and seek employment in her field. Her expertise aligned perfectly with our requirements, and she joined us as our newest Mining Geotechnical Consultant.

?

We had the opportunity to ask Diana about herself and her time with Terracon.?

?

Regardless of your title, how would you define what you do at Terracon?

“I work in the Mining Geotechnical Group, where we oversee Surface and Underground Geotechnical design for hard rock at different mine sites across Canada.”

?

How would you describe your skill set or expertise at Terracon?

“During my time at Terracon, I have worked on sites in Saskatchewan, Ontario, and British Columbia for commodities like uranium, gold, nickel, and zinc. This was exciting, as the geology was different from the sites I worked on in the past, and the commodities were, in some cases, new?to me, keeping me interested in my work. There is always something new to learn and to teach, as another side of my role in Terracon is to help junior and intermediate engineers increase their skills in mining geotechnical design.” #mentoring

?

What are your passions and goals??

“I love travelling to learn about new places and playing tennis. One of my short-term goals is to earn my Professional Engineer designation (PEng) in British Columbia, as I will feel that all my years of study are fully recognized in Canada.”

?

Who has been the biggest source of inspiration in your life, and why?

“My close family is my biggest source of inspiration. Although they may not have had the chance to study for a college degree or work in what they would love, they always supported me in following a college education and going to places even if they were far away from home, which meant that I could not see them as much as I wish.”

?

If you could have lunch with one person, who would it be and why??

“That is a difficult question, but I guess that I would like to have lunch with my dad one more time. He passed away a few years back, but his departure was so sudden that I didn’t have the chance to say goodbye to him. He would also love to see his granddaughters all grown up.”

?

What is the most important advice you would give to a young woman starting in our industry today?

“I would tell a young woman not to give up in our industry, even if it can seem like a rocky path; remember, the treasure is at the end of the road. Also, she should take all the chances to improve her abilities, learn a new language, and travel as much as possible to discover other cultures' ways of working.

I received some great advice from two women in my career. The first talked me into changing my original IT degree to Mining Engineering, and I never looked back. The second one, my supervisor in Australia, gave me all the confidence I needed when I doubted myself. She totally trusted my criteria, and I learned great leadership and mentoring abilities from her.”

?

Anything else you would like to add??

“Celebrating International Women’s Day/Month in Terracon is great. I met very bright and skilled women in the company, and I am happy to contribute to making Terracon a place where everyone has a chance to blossom. This year’s theme is “Inspire Inclusion,” and Terracon is an excellent example.”

?

Thank you Diana! Not only for sharing your time with us but for your invaluable support both technically and in helping to develop the future of our mining engineers!
