Inspiring Journey of Dr. S. I. Padmavati; The Godmother of Indian Cardiac Care


Dr. Sivaramakrishna Iyer Padmavati, the first female Cardiologist of India, is known for her immense contributions to Indian cardiac care. Born in Burma, Padmavati studied her MBBS at Rangoon Medical College and started her career practicing medicine in London. In that time, she got interested in cardiology and realized that cardiology in India is at stake. With her strong passion for making a difference in the Indian cardiology sector, Dr. Padmavati decided to return to her homeland.

After reaching India, she has been actively involved in research and has tried her best to contribute to advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. She set up the country’s first cardiology clinic and created the first cardiology department in an Indian medical college. Her decision to build India's first heart foundation had a big impact on the Indian healthcare sector, mainly in spreading awareness and helping people struggling with heart diseases.

She was the director of the National Heart Institute, Delhi, and the founder president of the All India Heart Foundation. In 1992, Padmavati was awarded India’s second-highest civilian honor, the Padma Vibhushan.

Dr. Padmavati’s contributions to the Indian cardiology sector are beyond words, paving the way for generations of women to follow their dreams in healthcare.
