Every March, the world is (mostly) united in celebrating International Women’s Day, which honors the achievements of women everywhere and provides a chance to recognize the progress made in gender equality.?
The reason behind that “mostly” is that despite improvements and efforts, gender inequality remains one of the most pressing issues of our time. Women worldwide are still denied fundamental rights and freedoms, and many countries lack laws protecting them from discrimination and exploitation.?
Sadly we don’t have to look far. In 2022, women in the U.S. earned 80% of what their male peers did. In 2022, it was only 84% when comparing women and men employed full time. This research looks at data and shares why the gap is still significant, the pressures facing working men and women, and gender-related career path aspirations.
International Women’s Day gives us a moment to pause and reflect on how far we have come regarding women’s rights as universal human rights.?
One of the most important steps we can take to keep on fighting is to raise awareness about the issue.?
This week the Red Direction team brings you a selection of five articles to shed more light on women worldwide on International Women’s Day.?

Women in tech are making history every day, inspiring others to take up careers in science and technology. Despite challenges, women continue to break ground and make considerable headway in tech. Their success is paving the way for a bright future where women will be well-represented within technology —– creating massive waves of innovation.
Sadly, women have yet to experience legal parity regarding rights with their male counterparts. Women experience a disproportionate amount of gender bias, highlighted by the fact that they still only have 76.5 out of a possible 100 legal rights — a glaring difference that impedes women's economic inclusion.?
However, 23 nations have taken some measures towards tackling this gender bias by reforming laws in 2021 to ensure women are not at a further disadvantage compared to men. This work must continue, as women should not be denied any rights due to their gender.
Violence against women and girls has reached a devastating scale around the globe. A United Nations report recently revealed that an unimaginable 736 million women worldwide endured physical and psychological violence, making it clear that women’s safety can no longer be taken for granted.
Abuse takes many forms, from intimate partner violence to sexual harassment. Since COVID-19 forced us into quarantine, reports show an alarming increase in abuse: women face higher financial pressures and a lack of access to resources and services needed to escape the daily abuse.?

Women have accomplished extraordinary feats throughout history, becoming powerful symbols of resilience, strength, and courage. From women gaining the right to vote to women on the front lines winning wars — women across the globe have been fighting for their rights, and for the rights of others, for centuries.?
We owe so much to women who changed the course of history with their hard work and tenacity. It’s no wonder women today are still ringing in success story after success story — they are simply following in a long line of women before them who refused to settle and searched for equality until they found it.?
By understanding how women who came before us overcame seemingly impossible obstacles, we can draw inspiration and discover how to genuinely use our talents to impact the world.
Women are the backbone of society, and they should be valued and encouraged to succeed. In order to help combat violence against women and girls, it is essential to foster empowerment through positive reinforcement of their successes as well as provide the resources needed in order to live safe and secure lives.?
This means listening to women’s ideas and concerns, believing in women's capabilities, standing up for women’s rights, and investing in women across all sectors of society — in the community, at home, in the workplace, and beyond.?
When women have access to the wider society, the capacity for both physical safety as well as economic success stands a much greater chance of being realized. Supporting women’s success is a critical step toward ending violence against women and girls.
