My Personal Story

7.5 years ago, I left corporate to take the massive leap of faith into entrepreneurship.

I left my steady paycheck. My health insurance. My 401k. The big name companies.

I literally bet on myself. Doubled down. I went forward with faith. And my husband put all his faith in me and didn’t question me for a single second. He knew the risk of potentially losing 50% of our household income and he said “yes” wholeheartedly! My two biggest supporters were my husband and my dad. My dad has always been the positive, encouraging, supportive voice my entire life. He taught me entrepreneurship through his own life. Both what to do and what not to do. And both lessons were equally important.

I left corporate because I was hungry for more. I believed I could make an impact on the world beyond what I was doing daily.

On a personal level, I knew I needed to make a change if I ever wanted to have a family of my own. My hunger to grow my career at a rapid pace and my strongest desire to have a family of my own were not compatible.

So, I created the compatibility.

Always the Numbers

Inc Magazine completes an annual survey of the CEOs on the Inc 5000 list. Here are some interesting stats from the 2023 CEOs:

  • 19% female
  • 10% under the age of 35
  • 55% started their business with less than $10,000.
  • 78% used their own savings to start the company.
  • 80% funded their growth internally (revenue).
  • 57% named LinkedIn as the most important social media platform for their business.

The Next Step

Rinse and repeat for to accomplish our next goal!

My Top 10 Focuses in Achieving Success

(not numbered as this is not an ordered list of importance)

  • Relationships. My chosen life partner (my husband) has always emotionally supported me, problem solved with me, listens, encourages my crazy ideas, and brings positivity to the table! Whether single or married, choosing the romantic partner, the friends, or the family who will truly be in your corner and provide that emotional support! Entrepreneurship is a lonely road without a trusted shoulder to lean!
  • Financial Plan. Knowing my personal budget and my bare minimum requirements for a roof over our heads and food on the table alleviated my stress if the business needed to take a risk. Knowing I would not jeopardize my family allowed me to take BIG risks and sometimes (more than once!!!) When those BIG risks “failed” my family’s daily life was not in upheaval.
  • Failure is Not an Option. Failure only happens when you stop. Don’t stop. It’s a roller coaster. The highs are high, and the lows are low. Sometimes within the same workday! Keep going!
  • Find a Creative Outlet. Personal happiness. Business 24/7 as an entrepreneur is real. Personal relationships and personal independence are easily lost.
  • Red Lights are Necessary. It’s an opportunity to change the path. Maybe you were in the path to go straight. But you hit a red light and realized turning right was the correct choice! It’s okay to slow down to speed back up!
  • Pivot. Allow flexibility. This allows for creativity when your back is against the wall. There is always a path forward. My favorite example of this is a friend’s company who started as a maternity rental business and pivoted to a tech company that ended up with a $100 million valuation.
  • Delegate. Also called: get help! Whether this is in your personal life or in business.
  • Saying “no” is okay. Your time is precious! Personal and business!
  • Saying “yes” is okay. You never know where your life partner, business partner, big client, big vendor, best friend, next big idea will be found!
  • Always Give Thanks. I find the time to attend church and give thanks for the countless blessings in my life. It’s my quiet time. My self-reflection and stillness time where I can feel not alone in this universe. I did not find success alone. For me it’s been through God, my husband, my family, my business partners, my colleagues, and my friends.

There is always more! There is always the next mountain.

Taking the time to celebrate and give thanks provides meaning to the hard work!

Filling up the cup,

Helen
