Celebrating Trailblazers in the LGBTQIA+ Athletic Community

Dear Next.Up Athletes,

In this second installment of our newsletter series, we celebrate the courageous LGBTQIA+ athletes who have paved the way for greater inclusivity and visibility in sports. Their stories not only inspire us but also highlight the ongoing journey toward acceptance and equality in the athletic world.

Here are some trailblazing athletes you should know:

  • Billie Jean King: An icon in tennis, she has been a fierce advocate for gender equality and LGBTQIA+ rights. Her book, All In: An Autobiography, is a powerful read about her life on and off the court.
  • Greg Louganis: A gold-medalist diver, Greg has been a significant figure in bringing attention to HIV and LGBTQIA+ issues within sports. His book, Breaking the Surface, dives into his journey of self-acceptance.
  • Megan Rapinoe: Known for her prowess on the soccer field and her advocacy, Megan is a role model for equal pay and LGBTQIA+ rights. She co-authored One Life, which details her soccer career and activism.
  • Jason Collins: The first openly gay player in any major American team sport, his coming out was a pivotal moment for LGBTQIA+ athletes. His story is a testament to courage and the power of living authentically.
  • Caster Semenya: An Olympic runner who has continually advocated for the rights of intersex athletes, her resilience in the face of adversity is inspiring.

Resources and Actions to Support LGBTQIA+ Athletes:

  • Read Their Stories: Engage with the books and articles written by or about these athletes to understand their impacts on sports and society.
  • Support LGBTQIA+ Sports Initiatives: Many organizations, such as Athlete Ally and The You Can Play Project, work towards inclusivity in sports. Consider supporting or volunteering.
  • Celebrate Achievements: Use social media and other platforms to highlight the successes and struggles of LGBTQIA+ athletes. Recognition can pave the way for future generations.

These athletes have not only excelled in their sports but have also stood up for a world where everyone can participate authentically.

Let's draw inspiration from their courage and dedication as we strive to create a more inclusive athletic community.

With admiration,

Whit & the Next.Up Athletic. Team
