Celebrating Tourism and Peace in Angola: A Memorable September 2024 Journey

Opening Education Program for Tourism at Hotel Forum

This September, I had the incredible honor of joining the Presidential delegation for Angola's Tourism Month celebrations, where the global theme, Tourism and Peace, was at the forefront. It was a month of dual significance for Angola, as we also honored the legacy of our first president, Agostinho Neto, for his monumental role in liberating our country from colonialism and slavery, big Thank you to Giza Gaspar-Martins for the invitation.

At the invitation of the Ministério do Turismo Angola Minister of Tourism S.E. Dr. Marcio Daniel, I traveled to the northern province of Cabinda, an oil-rich region where I had the privilege of witnessing the grand opening of two stunning hotels: Apolonia Komplexus, featuring a breathtaking infinity pool, and Apolonia Hotel in the heart of the province. These developments signal a new chapter for tourism in Cabinda, and I was inspired by the potential they hold for local and international visitors alike.

In Luanda, I had the pleasure of staying at the Intercontinental Hotel, a true 5-star experience. Their service was impeccable, reflecting the high standard that they are renowned for. Similarly, the President Hotel, overlooking the serene promenade of Baía de Luanda, continues to uphold its elegant reputation in both quality and service. I hold in high regard Mr. Gamboa, who, even though I visit only once a year, always remembers my preferences—a truly memorable host.

I also had the honor of attending a special event at Hotel Forum, where I joined our Secretary of State for Tourism to mark the opening of training programs for the institutions involved in welcoming tourists to Angola. The hotel's attention to detail and service during this occasion was outstanding, highlighting their commitment to precision and excellence.

Tourism and literature often go hand in hand, and I was privileged to attend the launch of a new book, Carreiras Lusófonas – Experiência e Desafios da Migra??o, by Berta Montalv?o , at the recommendation of Dr. Vieira Lopes, Secretary of State for International Relations Ministério das Rela??es Exteriores de Angola . The book resonates deeply with those of us who have left our home countries and adapted to new environments. Berta’s work is a thoughtful reflection on the migrant experience, and I congratulate her on this remarkable contribution.

In my gatherings with Angola’s Secretary of State for Communication, Dr. Nuno Caldas, it was inspiring to hear about the ambitious agenda to make tourism a significant contributor to Angola's GDP—a vision also shared by my dear friend and parlamentarian, Dr. Elsa Barber. The potential for growth in this sector is tremendous, and I am thrilled to witness these efforts firsthand.

Of course, my personal commitment to uplifting the lives of people in Angola remains strong, particularly in Okavango, which holds a special place in my heart. Through my philanthropic work in Northern Europe, I continue to focus on initiatives that enhance living conditions in this beautiful region.

My journey across Angola also took me to the province of Bengo, where I explored Barra do Dande, a coastal gem known for its fresh seafood and stunning beaches. A swim in the Atlantic was a perfect way to embrace the natural beauty of the area.

Venturing to Cabo Ledo was another unforgettable experience. I explored a fascinating cave with a unique history, where wearing jewelry is traditionally prohibited. The trip continued with visits to the Carpe Diem and Surf’s Beach resorts, where playful monkeys along the road added a touch of adventure. Miradouro da Lua, with its dramatic sand dunes, was a breathtaking highlight of the region.

Lastly, no visit to Luanda is complete without enjoying the sunset on Ilha de Luanda, with its calming atmosphere and cocktails by the Atlantic Ocean. I also took a trip outside the capital to Malanje, where the majestic waterfalls provided a serene escape into Angola’s natural beauty.

This journey was more than just about tourism—it was a deep connection to the peace, culture, and opportunities within our country. Angola’s tourism potential is immense, and I’m excited about the future of our nation as we continue to grow and share our wonders with the world.
