Celebrating Success at the Cardiff Property Awards 2024
Pentan Architects
well-honed expertise, commercial awareness and commitment to design, buildability and longevity
We are thrilled to announce that our St Teilo's Low Carbon Housing project has been honoured with 'Residential Project of the Year' and the prestigious 'Winner of Winners' title at the Cardiff Property Awards 2024.
These awards recognise not only the quality of our work but also the ambitious vision and collaborative efforts that brought this project to life.
Project Description
Located in Maelfa, Llanedeyrn, the project includes 53 new energy-efficient homes, predominantly 2, 3, and 5 bedrooms affordable dwellings. This development addresses the housing needs of individuals on the Council house waiting list and also includes a small development for adults with learning difficulties.
With a goal to attain Passivhaus Plus accreditation, our ambitious project integrates energy generation, low consumption, and high-performance MMC fabric-first construction techniques. The use of a double timber stud modern method of construction ensures a superior building fabric, reflecting our commitment to pushing the boundaries of sustainable architecture.
A New Benchmark for Sustainable Social Housing
St Teilo’s project represents a bold step forward in addressing some of the most pressing challenges of our time, reducing fuel poverty for residents, sustainable low carbon design, and ambitious placemaking. Designed with a clear focus on reducing environmental impact, the development demonstrates how thoughtful design can meet ambitious sustainability targets while creating homes that are vibrant, welcoming, and community-focused.
The innovative design integrates low-carbon construction techniques and energy-efficient systems, all of which were rigorously interrogated and aligned to ambitious LETI whole-life carbon targets. Beyond sustainability, our approach placed significant emphasis on placemaking—creating spaces that foster a sense of belonging within Maelfa, connection, and well-being.
A Partnership of Ambition

This success would not have been possible without the forward-thinking leadership of Cardiff Council, whose ambition and commitment to delivering high-quality social housing have been instrumental in bringing forward the St Teilo design. Their vision, along with the excellent work of the other consultants provided the foundation for a project that we hope will inspire a new standard for social housing developments across Wales.
Inspiring the Future of Housing
Winning these awards is an honour, but more importantly, it reinforces our belief that projects like St Teilo’s can serve as a benchmark for future housing schemes. As the housing sector continues to grapple with the challenges of climate change and social equality, we are proud to demonstrate how innovative design, and collaboration can lead the way.
We extend our deepest thanks to everyone involved in the project—from our dedicated team to our client, and consultants.
Here’s to a more sustainable, inclusive, and inspiring future for housing in Wales.
