During this South Asian Heritage Month, I’m honouring the remarkable contributions and stories of individuals from this vibrant community, and this week, I’m shining a spotlight on Deepa Kalikiri , the General Counsel and Company Secretary at Boku , whose journey beautifully encapsulates the richness of South Asian culture and its enduring impact.
Deepa's roots trace back to Chennai, India, a city bursting with life and tradition. In our enlightening conversation, we delve into how her heritage shaped her upbringing, instilling in her a strong sense of community and an unwavering commitment to education. Through heartfelt stories of cultural celebrations and family values, Deepa's experiences remind us of the significance of embracing our backgrounds, fostering connections, and the unique perspective that each of us brings to the mosaic of modern society. Join me and explore her inspiring narrative and the profound influence of South Asian heritage on her life and career.
? Sadia: Can you tell me about your South Asian heritage??
Deepa: My South Asian heritage is deeply rooted in Chennai, India. Chennai, (formerly known as Madras) is a vibrant city located in the southern part of India.
? Sadia: How did your heritage impact you when growing up??
Deepa: Growing up, my heritage from Chennai had a significant impact on me in many ways. Culturally, the rich traditions and customs of South Asian culture, played a significant role in my upbringing. For instance, my parents would gather all our friends (Indian and French) and celebrate festivals every year which helped me to preserve a connection with my cultural roots and importantly provided me with a deep sense of community. There was also a strong emphasis on education within my family which instilled in me a rigorous work ethic and a commitment to education at a very young age. In hindsight, it was more than just academic achievement, I realised with that time the emphasis my parents placed on education helped me cultivate a strong sense of discipline and perseverance which shaped my approach to various challenges and opportunities.
? Sadia: Has your own views on your own heritage changed as you've gotten older??
Deepa: As I've grown older, my views on my heritage have evolved significantly. In my younger years, especially after moving to Paris, I often felt a sense of dual identity, balancing my South Asian roots with the new cultural experiences was especially challenging, as I attended a French school where I was the only Asian student. Initially, I might have taken certain aspects of my heritage for granted or seen them as separate from my daily life in France but with age, I've developed a deeper appreciation for my South Asian heritage. The traditions, values, and cultural practices I grew up with have become more meaningful as I've come to understand their historical and cultural significance.

Living and working in diverse environments such as in Paris and London have also taught me to see my heritage as a unique asset. It's not just about where I come from but also how it shapes my worldview and interactions. My Indian roots and upbringing in France have provided a foundation of resilience, strength, adaptability, and respect for diversity, which have been invaluable in my personal and professional life.
As I’ve matured, I've found ways to bridge my South Asian heritage with the cultures I've been part of. This blending has enriched my life and those of my children, allowing me to create a unique cultural identity that celebrates both my origins and the places I've lived.
? Sadia: What one thing do you think is worth celebrating about your heritage???
Deepa: One thing truly worth celebrating about my heritage is the emphasis on strong family values. The strong emphasis on family and community in South Asian culture has profoundly influenced my values and outlook at all different stages of my life. It taught me the importance of empathy, support, and cooperation. These values have guided me in building and nurturing and meaningful relationships in my personal and professional life, regardless of where I am.

7 个月What a beautiful post about a wonderful woman Sadia. Thank you - and Deepa - for sharing. It would be great to have a Zoom chat as I have two suggestions which I hope you will like - one being guesting on my podcast 'Our Spirited Life!'. The other being a round table event in London in October with discussion around DEI. Hope to hear from you soon!
