Celebrating Small Victories

As I look back over my professional career thus far, I can admit it’s hard for me to celebrate the small victories. The small victories that take place each and every day. Not only do I not acknowledge small victories, I fail to even accept them.

But looking back in retrospect the smaller victories may arguably be more important than the larger milestones, and here is why I believe that to be true now:

Faithfulness
The smaller victories have given me the faithfulness (confidence) I need to reach the larger milestones. I heard this during a sermon last week, “Faith will get you to believe in the end goal, faithfulness will get you to trust the process along the way.”

Momentum
The smaller victories create the momentum I need to keep going.  “I was able to get to work on time. I checked my email first thing in the morning without being interrupted.  I wrote my to-do-list for the day before my first meeting.” As I accomplish these small victories, I notice myself starting to find pleasure and fascination in my work.

Easier to Work with
It’s nothing like being easy to work with, if you don’t think so ask your co-workers. That’s one of the ways my smallest of victories have benefited me—they make me feel better, happier and less stressed out. I’ve noticed that when I’ve focused solely on the bigger picture, I begin to worry and in turn harder to work with.

I understand now that the reason I am where I am in my career today is because I’ve embodied those 3 things, and the day-to-day small victories deserve all of the credit.

The key to a fulfilled career may very well be finding joy in the smallest of successes.
