Celebrating seafarer photography at CrewConnect
Now back in the UK after an intense and interesting week in Manila, it’s good to reflect on the time spent in at the CrewConnect conference.
It was very special to be able to celebrate our seafarer-photographers during the Crew Connect Awards Gala Dinner and a great pleasure to see their pleasure in being included in the room of illustrious members of the maritime community.
Life at Sea 2022 was our third photo competition, featuring images of seafarers by seafarers and we couldn’t have been prouder to hand over the prizes in front of such an invested and enthusiastic audience.
The winning image ‘Home sick’ by San Ko Oo from Myanmar.is a picture that could tell a thousand stories – on the one hand very personal, on the other universal. San Ko Oo was present on video and shared his first encounter with the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) when he and his crew mates were not paid by their company he was helped by Shwe Tun Aung , ITF Inspector in Houston and went on to become a proud member of the Independent Federation of Myanmar Seafarers (IFOMS).
With us at the dinner we had Harold Papa Melendez - second prize winner and Aldrin M Ulep and Aljon Manlangit whose photos featured in our book from the previous competition ‘Out of Sight Not Out of Mind’.

As well as awarding the winners’ prizes, we were able to display even more of the fabulous photographs in an exhibition which was on in the conference venue over the period of the event. It was great to see so many people appreciating their contributions.
Recognition is due to CORA campaign communications did a great job on the visuals with a stunning package of photo videos and animations. Barbo Vivien of Wall & Vivien designed and produced our beautiful exhibition display panels.
Now we have an amazing resource of some 5,000 images and stories and a massive task on our hands to spread the word. We recently presented the archive to the Congress of International Maritime Museums and we’ve got lots of exciting plans for the future. The ITF Seafarers' Trust photography competition is now an annual event. It's open to all seafarers – and we hope that across the industry, and beyond, we will have support to promote it so that we can keep giving a voice to seafarers through the lens of their smartphones.
