Celebrating Our Champions of Science with the 2018 Johnson Medal

In a perfect world, we would have no disease. But today, we still need medicines and technological solutions to maintain or help people return to health. At Johnson & Johnson, we have a tradition, now going on 41 years, of recognizing our scientists and engineers who work tirelessly to create new health solutions with an award: The Johnson Medal for Research and Development. The Johnson Medal is the highest honor for innovation we bestow upon our employees. Since its creation in 1960, 382 of our scientists and engineers have received this recognition.

Last night, 23 of our colleagues were the newest Johnson Medal honorees. Their work ranges from an innovative contact lens that mimics natural tear film, to a combination of hardware and software technology that is revolutionizing how fractures and deformities are corrected, to innovative medicines that help extend lives of people with cancer and HIV.

To develop such innovations, these winners applied insights, imagination, tenacity and collaboration to the most pressing health issues. They persevered, often for years, through discoveries, disappointments, surprises and successes. They took risks and detours, and their journeys have yielded breakthroughs that are changing the trajectory of health for humanity. We think this makes them some of the finest scientists and engineers anywhere in the world.

We also believe in celebrating innovators and those who champion science wherever they may be. That’s why we also recognize scientists whose innovations have already transformed human health with the Dr. Paul Janssen Award for Biomedical Research; foster future generations of scientific leaders through initiatives like the Next Einstein Forum, 1000 Girls - 1000 Futures, and the BioGENEius Challenge; as well as share narratives about the role of science in society via our Champions of Science Storytelling Challenge

As we strive toward a world without disease, I hope you will join me in celebrating those who enhance the health of others through innovation and science. And to these Champions of Science: thank you!
