Celebrating our amazing volunteers: A day to say thank you to those making a difference in our region.

Western Downs Regional Council has recognised the dedicated service of volunteers at the beautiful Jubri's Hideaway as part of National Volunteers Week 15-21 May 2023.

This year's National Volunteer Week theme was 'The Change Makers', which explored the breadth, diversity, and richness of volunteering activity in our communities.

Council spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said a 'Change Maker' is someone who takes action to make our world a better place - and here on the Western Downs, our local volunteers perfectly embody that!

"Our hard-working volunteers are an essential part of our region, and they make a huge difference! Whether it's helping at community events or providing support to those in need, volunteers are the backbone of our active vibrant communities," Cr Maguire said.

"We are very blessed as a region to be surrounded by all types of volunteers that make our region a better place.

“From supporting Council at our local facilities to welcoming tourists to our region, our volunteers are one of the reasons why the Western Downs is known for its friendly, welcoming community and ‘the people that make it’.

"Showing appreciation for our volunteers is important because it helps to acknowledge their hard work and dedication and encourages them to continue their valuable contributions.”

Chinchilla resident and active volunteer at the Chinchilla Library Toni Emin said she enjoyed volunteering because of all the fascinating people she meets, as well as knowing she is doing her part to add value to our community.

"Even though I have only been in the Western Downs for nine months, I am already in awe of the fantastic community spirt here in Chinchilla. The library is an amazing space that has given me that boost to get out there,” Mrs Emin said.

"My favourite thing about volunteering is being able to give back to the community. We have had many volunteers help my family through troubling times, and now it is my turn to dedicate my time to helping others.

"There is no second guessing when volunteering on the Western Downs, you get back what you give. Being someone who takes pride in giving back and helping others results in no greater feeling than helping the community.”
